space required for placing PO?

If a BG wants to place Portable Obstacles the rules say that the BG is moved back and the PO is placed at the BGs prior front edge.

What happens if there are friends (or enemy for that matter) to the BGroups rear)
Does they all push out the way?
Would it make a difference if the firends were Light foot?
What if they were artillery behind Field Fortifications.

The PO take the place of the front of the unit so there is no argument about contact and shooting distance. It is to stop arguments over where a BG is. I personnaly don't think it matters where they go* providing you know they are there.

We usually just move 1 base of PO around with the BG. Put it at the back. When it is deployed it is put where it fits at the front, moving the base it is in front of back. If they move without picking them up it is discarded. (or at least put back in the box)

*they are just a depiction and do not alter the position of your BG for when it next moves

So if there is no room for both the PO and the BG do you denote that the BG has stakes deployed with a counter - like when there is no room for a general with a Battlegroup?

As an extreme example - If I had a BG with its base edge touching my table top base edge how can the PO be deployed - would the BG then be moving intentionally off table - which is not permitted.

The benefit of the way you are describing is that the PO are always on table (at the rear or front) so you always know there is room to deploy them.

Using a marker is what I would do and what I would allow if I was ever called as an umpire. Anything else would be a bit dumb. (IMO)

In any case the authors keep saying the bases are over deep and insisting on obscure interpretations of "in the open"* because of that.
