LT 1.4.7 First game impressions

Post by timmy1 »

I built a Principate Roman early list using the DAG, similar to what I would choose on the table. Let the computer choose opponents randomly - they came up with Ostrogoths. EVERYTHING Gothic shoots which is fine. However the AI deployment seemed odd. It seemed as if the deployment choosen took account of the terrain on the Gothic side of the table only. They ended up with the vast majority of the mounted deployed opposite a large gully (flanked by a wood). It then became quite easy to screen off most of his mounted and get into the archers with my legion. While it was tremendous fun getting a really big win it did not feel historical.

I do have the saved deployment if required for analysis.

OK my first game impressions are overall everything seemed to work fine and I didn't see any major graphic or text problems in the battle.

I used the D.A.G to build a 400pt Early Principate Roman army, with a few Batavian allies thrown into it and set it off against a Germanic Horde. The AI picked it's troops well and overall it outnumbered me by about 3,000 men. The Army break point for the Romans was 30 and 38 for the Horde, game lasted about 12 turns and was characterized by the AI stripping his centre to gain superiority on the flanks. My right flank, held by the Batavians, was battered and barely holding on in the end, the left flank, manned by legionnaires and a few archers collapsed entirely. The German centre though was ripped to pieces, but this came too late to save the left flank. I lost, but I put it down to a few poor choices when I was building the army (I don't normally play Romans). Break points were 30/30 and 33/38, close but no cigar :)

One interesting point was the AI had an aversion to attacking my camp, a cavalry unit slipped through on the flank and came within two hexes of the camp to then just sit there until the end of the game, very un-barbarian like of it :D
