Anything decided on base sizes yet?

Post by riddcowler »

I've been reading the postings here with growing enthusiasm and have decided to re-enter the Ancients fray after a couple of years break :) . I appreciate the rules themselves will not be published for about a year but as I would like to start recruiting some armies I wondered whether you have settled on base sizes yet? If I follow the current DBM basing will I be safe? Also what about troops that are either compulsory or voluntarily double based in DBM? I'm looking to start with an old favourite - macedonians. Should I avoid double basing any pikes :? ?

Thanks for your help.

No need to double base. We have settled on a practical principle of minimising the amount of rebasing needed from 7th or DBM. So you are pretty safe with Macedonians on DBM size bases.

Great to hear you feel encouraged to push an ancient army around again...hope you like it.

But will existing double based troops cause a problem? For ease of movement a lot of my pikes are double based already. Will I need to rebase them or will a number of single bases within the battle group be OK along with the double bases? I am resigned though to rebasing my early Swiss.

TIA

Double bases are OK for convenience but you will need some 'change'.

Early Swiss DBE's are not that silly in AoW. Most troops fight in melee with two ranks so you could probably get away with only rebasing a portion of your Swiss and following the 'change' principle.

Double based are fine too and it would be pretty odd if pikes fought less than 3 ranks deep. All you need is 2 single bases per battle group. So if working in 12 - 5 doubles and 2 singles per BG.

I think my last Macedonian army had 5 x 8 base BGs in fact.

That covers the range as you will want you pikes in 8-12s per BG.

Does that mean nobody is going to laugh at me for using them now  , or my 6 figure wedges on 40mmx40mm bases will be ok providing I have a few single bases
