US Airborne - S3F ... Pip ?

Post by Merr »

Pip,

I've noticed, since v1.5, that you have included S3F's for many of the models.

By chance, are you going to continue to supply all of the S3F's ? I know it would be a larger D/L (for the updates) but I'm interested in the S3F's as they allow modded skin's to made of the models (without having to use a hex editor on the S4F).

If you have a moment ... Could you upload the S3F of the US_AIRBORNE.s4f , please?

For the past month, I've been successfully editting the S3F and understanding what's what. To complete the ParaDrop concept scenario, I need to have the us_airborne s3f to twiddle with to see how far I can get this to go. From what I've been able to do (so far) is add mesh, materials, and adjust the animation ... The us_airborne S3F would be the wildest experiment to perform ( call me Dr Frankenstein if you must) ...... When I holler "It's Alive!, Alive I tell you!" ... then, well I can move along to other crazy stuff, which means I'll need more S3F's to edit.

I know it probably would be easier to work on a 3DS, but I like to do things the hard way considering how far I've gotten with hand working the S3F. Besides, I don't know if Blender can import everything from a 3DS.

Thanks in advance!

This is what I get in blender for the Brit infantry 3DS that was provided a while ago.

You can call me junk - and type that with one hand.

You could try the .X files I posted up? Cross compatibility of the models is a real pain.

The S3F files shouldn't have been there - must have been an oversight! But if they are of value I can certainly put together a pack. Although I don't think I have them on my machine atm - I will ping Richard and ask him to post some.

Cheers

I don't think blender import's the animation (for .X) ... I'm at work, so can't check now.
But yes, the .X worked fine for viewing purposes (correct viewing) than the 3DS (in MS3D and Frag)

Well, it was a good oversight, none-the-less. Yes, a seperate package of all your S3F's (stand alone) would help ... I mean, not for hand editting but for the other reason  changing the material DDS without having to use a hex editor on the S4F.

If it's no trouble Pip ... I'm about the only off-the-wall mod guy requesting such things ...

Thanks in advance.

Can the .S3F files be imported into Blender to work on the animations? If not what can you do with the .S3F using Notepad++ ? Changing text characters sounds much easier than binary :(

I'm looking to see how the mortar and HMG units can be animated to move .... it's so strange watching an MG42 crew sliding along on their derrieres

Some of the guys have found it pretty simple to tweak the text files for things like texture changes and so on. But it would be pretty much impossible to add animations in using that method! :)

The mortar and MGs don't have any movement animations, as they were never designed to move, so you'd need to create them in a modelling package.

And, just to confirm, I couldn't do the animations by importing a unit's file into Blender using one of the many formats that seem available (S3F, S4F, X or 3DS ... is that them all!)

Ain't this 3D modelling lark complicated :?

I think part of the problem is that all the animation systems rely on subtly different stuff. I knew getting some examples into other packages would be half the hassle!

I will try and find some time to dump out some other formats and see if we can come up with anything :)
