Painting Black armour
I would be obliged if anyone could share their technique for painting blackened armour on for example 30 years war cuirassier. Have not yet found a finish that I like.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Painting Black armour
I've been using the Foundry triad of blackened barrel (it's 105 I think). I use the base and the highlight. After varnishing I flat it down. The metallic paint leaves a metallic sheen. The paint is difficult to work with I find - I really have to thin it out a lot to make something usable. I add both flow enhancer and water. But I like the result.marshalney2000 wrote:I would be obliged if anyone could share their technique for painting blackened armour on for example 30 years war cuirassier. This technique might be helpful:

It shows an axe instead of an armour but i'm sure it can be used for armours too, i
actually plan to use this method for my armoured guys.

In my "Mustering the Tercio" blog series, I paint up some armored pikemen with blackened armor. You might find what I did helpful. You can check it out at:

mix it yourself
I bought some "Pewter" mettalic craft paint and darkened it with black to get the right shade. I primer in black and use this thinned to wash with. I made about two ounces of it in a clean little jar.
Works great.

I am an old fart who is set in his ways. I use Testors and Model Masters flats/matt finsh. When I do armour and many weapon's metal surfaces, I use thinned down black to create a wash. I do not prime what is to be black washed. Metal minies DO take to it better than grey plastic does. I like the way it looks so I just stick with my long used wash.

I do paint blackend armor with the old Ral Partha Steel color. Fits very well in my eyes.
Here an image on how it looks (miniatures are from Donnington)

I'd paint the armour black, them lightly dry brush gun metal, then use either badab black or devlan mud as a wash. If you really wanted to go for some finish, you could then highlight the very edges with gunmetal and/or silver to give the impression of wear.
