say a group of 6 is in a line, and wants to contract
it can pull in 1 or 2 bases - leaving a front rank of 4 and a rear rank of 2 -is this correct?

Yes that's correct. The ranks must be as even as possible given the move made. So 4 and 2 is the best you can do from 6 wide.

Can you do reverse,ie expand,voluntarily leaving the same BG formation ie 4 front,2 rear?

Yes. You can only ahve 1 odd rank but otherwise OK.
