Conforming?

Post by TERRYFROMSPOKANE »

Please look at the diagram on page 63. Assume the Romans have charged the cavalry and the archers are too far away for the Romans to step forward to hit them. The impact combat produced no result and we have moved on to conforming in the Maneuver Phase. The Romans can not conform without coming into contact with the archers.

1. Do the Romans stay put and "continue to fight in an offset position with the same number of bases counting as in front edge contact or overlapping as if they had conformed" (pg 86)?

2. Does the leftmost Roman file count as an overlap?

3. Let's assume the box with the text "These charging bases stop..." is another enemy battle group and that there is an additional file of Romans on the far left (a 4x2 BG instead of 3x2), would it count as having moved to the right of the line and into overlap position even though it could not physically do so because of the presence of this third enemy BG?

Thanks.

It's hard to determine the geometry without the specific circumstances illustrated. The positions of the BGs would be radically different for your hypothetical to be in effect.
