A forum for discussion of anything to do with modelling for Field of Glory, including figures, painting, basing, terrain, buildings, uniform research and more.
Here are some pics of the first lot of my Gauls. They will form part of my Punic armies. Painted by Conflict in Colour (bar the casualties and head-man) and based by me.
I've based them on 40x40mm for a variety of reasons - mainly cosmetic. Hope fully I may actually get a game of FoG this year after last year's failure!
One question - what manufacturer is the wounded figure that is sitting, the one that looks a bit like the dying Gaul sculpture? I particularly like that one, and the way he makes the whole appearance that of a dynamic scene.
The sitting up guy is from Corvus Belli. Part of the Victory and Defeat pack. Really nice figures and if I paint more I will go the CB route, despite the faff of sticking on shields!
I can see a nice mix of Essex and CB, what I have done with my Gauls too (I also added a few Old Glory). I really like the result. In fact, regarding basing, what did you use? Did you use something of Woodland Scenics? The grass looks like very natural. Regarding the size of the base, I like sticking miniatures in double depth, especially the ones that are deep blocks (like my hoplites). I think is good, although for game purposes I also have some extra single bases to replace. I am thinking about doing something similar with my Gauls too, but I am still undecided.
Bases are 3mm MDF from East Riding Miniatures. I use model railway ballast (the brown one) in a mix of fine, medium and coarse. The smaller the figures the larger the mix of finer stuff. Then painted Brown Umber, dry brushed with a yellow brown, and finally an off white. The grass, it's a spring grass mix. I have a large back of unknown make and I'm dreading finding a match when it runs out!. Then some Woodland Scenics foliage and some Silfor two colour tufts.
I am really tempted to just do all mine in 40x40 and deal with casualties as and when.. not sure yet. But as you say, I think double basing works well. I may do my Carthaginian Spears like that as well.
I may look at OG when I do some more BGs but for the moment they are just part of my Carthaginians so I only need the three!
