Commanders Passing Through Gaps

In the Team Tournament we had a question arise about whether a commander could pass through a gap between ENEMY BGs that is less than 1 MU. It seems to me that there are several things that lead me to believe that it is allowed, but we were unable to confirm it. For example, commanders can be replaced by markers if no room for them, depth of commanders not specifically defined, they can move in any direction regardless of facing.

Fortunately, the commander could join the BG without actually passing through the gap and it was the final phase of the game, so we did not have to make a final call.

FWIW I agree with you - the rules don't specifically address this point but we know that the base only represents the Commander and a few aides - we also know that there is no restriction on a Commander moving into charge range or shooting range of an enemy BG - in his own bound - so it doesn't seem unreasonable that it can go through a gap between enemy BGs.

Assuming he has to pass a gap narrower than his base, I think this is actually very grey and would imagine it could get ruled either way.

In one sense he is technically in contact with enemy, which he can't because of his base size.

On the other we all agree it is representational base.

But I could see an arguement that while he retinue might not be the width of the base, he couldn't ride that close between enemy and not get caught.

I think this is an individual umpire's call each time.
