Page 49. Scottish.

'A Highland ally-commander can only command Highlanders'. Does that imply that you don't need a Highland ally-commander if you have Highlanders in the army?

Looks like if you want highlanders you have to go with the highland ally-commander sub general. Guess those crazy kilt wearing Scots don't trust anyone who is not from the highlands. So you will have to pay extra points for him and he can only command the highland rabble.

I'm no expert but I would think from the list:

>you can have Highlanders without a Highland ally-commander
>other commanders can command them
>if you want a cheaper 'ally-commander,' he's only going to be able to command Highlanders, but I don't have to have one to have some Highlanders in my army

As the list is written B is correct but I did wonder if D had the intent.

I can confirm that when writing this list it was never the intention at this period that a highland ally be compulsory as contingents often fought under lowland leadership. At Flodden the highlanders were mostly under Huntly who was by origin a borderer.
By the way I hate to be picky but Scotch is the drink and not a national classification of the Scottish people.

I must however correct you - down here it most certainly is both a drink and a national classification of Jocks.

Suppose it depends on how far from the highlands you get for a national designation by the other foreigners.

Much the same as we consider all you English as being murdering sassenachs. Never mind I never believed all these stories about the English being mean that I hear all the time.

Seriously, though, the only Highlander-related restriction is that a Highlander Ally Commander (which is available as part of the main list) may only command Highlanders. Highlanders appear as an Optional rather than an ally-only troop type so they can be fielded under any commanders. So you can take your Highlanders under a normal or ally commander.
