FoG crash at startup

Hi
Just tried to install RoR over FoG 1.4 with no success. Game would not start. Restored PC (WinXP) to pre RoR install attempt. FoG comes up with title screen then black screen with logos then crashes with the following error message:

Can you try installing the patch installer 1.4.0 over the top? Somethign seems to have become corrupt somewhere but not sure what. Hopefully this will clear it out.

I couldn't get 1.4 patch because it is only available through the game update, so I uninstalled FoG.
Re-installed v1.3.3 and everything worked.
Tried to install RoR before updating to 1.4. Installation successful but game crashed at startup with the following error message:

This was the same error as when i installed RoR over v1.4

Gave up
Uninstalled FoG, reinstalled and patched to v1.4
Would still like to resolve the issue and get RoR loaded.

Try installing RoR over the original FoG install and then install the 1.33 update. The original RoR installer included the first update to FoG and won't install correctly over later updates.

You have the very old version of Field of Glory which tries to patch the game. We can give you a download for the new version which just adds ROR without trying to patch. The issue is its trying to revert you to v1.1.2 which is what we were at when RoR initially released. We recognised the problem soon after and fixed it but there are a few people who have the old installer.

The alternative is to install FoG then ROR and then patch and it will work. Or apply 1.3.3 again over the top should also fix it.

My FoG was the latest 1.3.3 downloaded in December 2010.
When I uninstalled the game it left all of the files (inc. the RoR install) in place and only removed the exe etc.
When it was reinstalled RoR was available and working. Have yet to try the DAG to see if that works.
