turning and moving

Post by marty »

A number of posters seem to believe that one of the changes that needs to be made is to pevent drilled MF/HF from turning and moving. I'm not necessarily opposed to this but would suggest that unless realism and game balance are to be thrown out the window it would require a raft of other changes be made as well.

1) On the realism front, there is no reason why a unit of mounted troops (drilled or not) should perform a 90 degree turn more easily than foot. Indeed I would have thought getting a large body of men on horseback to do this would have been more difficult.

2) From a game balance point of view at the top end of open competitions just about the only foot we are seen are drilled MF (and some shooters). Handicap them and we have, as I have suggested before, "Mounted FOG".

I would suggest if drilled foot could no longer turn and move the same restriction would need to apply to all mounted battle troops and that it would probably be best if skirmishers required a CMT to turn and move (I would probably restrict their movement after turning to about 3" as well).

Worth remembering that a BG does not represent a unit, but several units together. How easy the whole group can manoeuvre is arguable.

For what it's worth I would have no problem with getting rid of all the turn and move options. The game would then be more about the tactical positioning of battle groups than the slick manoeuvre of same.
