Trade and Treachery

Post by quackstheking »

Father Christmas (aka the postman) delivered me this morning a pristine copy of Trade and Treachery - a very happy bunny indeed :D Some really interesting lists in there - lots of pike and arquebus!

Now the re-basing for my Gush based 25mm French Huguenots and 15mm Italian War French - these haven't seen the light of day in 18 years since my forays at the old World Championships in Derby when it was held at Assembley rooms!! Looks like I don't even need to do any new painting!!

Now roll on January when I can get my Poles out!! Maybe even debut them at Godentag!!

Mine arrived last week, quite a suprise! It caused me to rumage at the lead pile found 4 16 base Swiss Kiels and 4 16 base Lanscknect kiels + cav, arquebusiers etc, going to be quite a task to get them painted! Must finish my TYW stuff first, 15mm Poles nearly done in time for the next book!

Amazon...

Post by puster »

Amazon seems to be pretty late with sending these out. They tell me it will be sent out on December 27th... :-(

I think I will cancel the preorders on the rest and buy them from the first available source when they come out.

Canadian release is late December. The rules were similarly behind the European and Australian releases.

North Star

Post by puster »

I just cancelled my order with Amazon and ordered the exemplar at the Bargain section of North Star. Apart from being cheaper then Amazon it makes sure I get mine in time for christmas, not shipping on the 27th...

Like Deadtorius my annoyance with Amazon is slightly mollified by the fact that I am deep into bringing my ECW armies up to FOG standards.

What I fail to understand is how Amazon can have pre-orders for X number of copies and not be able to fulfil them on publication.
I have had one e-mail back from Amazon apologising for being out of stock of this popular item and
I am very sorry that you were not able to place your order before our supply ran out.
My fault obviously for only placing my order back in August and just to increase my confidence further
I can’t guarantee if or when it will be sold again by us.
I actually spoke to someone at Amazon this morning and they couldn't enlighten me any further either.
So whose fault is it, Amazon's, the publishers or the printers?

Having, until recently, been a bookseller for 25 years I know this level of service is truly awful.

With my current ECW schedule I can wait until February for T&T so here's hoping

T&T arrived yesterday from Caliver.

It looks like the 16th century was a Cambrian Explosion of infantry doctrines. Pike Kiels; Pike and Halberd Kiels; Pike and Sword Kiels; Pike and Shot Kiels; Pike, Halbard and Shot Kiels; Colunela; Early Tercios; Late Tercios; Late Tercios with bows; Pike, Bill, Bow and Shot blocks; Pike and Shot non-Kiels with ratios varying from 6:4 to 4:8; plus all the leftover medieval types. It's all a long way from WoR where just about everyone is either 2:4 pike and shot or 3:6 Late Tercios.

The early 16th century

LambertSimnel wrote:It looks like the 16th century was a Cambrian Explosion of infantry doctrines.
Indeed it was, though actually the Keil was an earlier doctrine just reintroduced with effect by the Swiss.

One reason was that it was the relatively short period where artillery made the old fortifications obsolete, and new artillery proofed were not yet fully developed. With even the heaviest and best equipped and motivated cavalry unable to actually break a pikeblock, you simply had to fight and win a war with infantry on the battlefield.

BTW: No ToT yet received from Northstar...

Lambert

Thank you for that very interesting taster of Tirades and Treacle. Knowing that it is so VERY interesting makes me even more hacked off that mine has still not arrived.

not missing much

Post by expendablecinc »

Dont worry chaps you are not missing much.
Of all of the Fog AM/R list books published to date its the most bland (Blood and Gold has more variety).

I am looking forward to the eastern list book but wish I hadnt got caught up in a purchasing frenzy and got trade and treachery when it appeared on local shelves.

Well, to each his own, I assume. I got mine today and like the army lists a lot. It seems to cover the available options pretty well, and certainly offers a good deal of variety. I would have loved an Ottoman army list (Vienna 1529, several engagements and a near major battle in 1532), but since the eastern armies, starting with Hungary, are not in it, I will have to wait. At least there are the North Africans to keep us occupied.

I just read into one historical section, the Venetians, and found the odd glitch: "Venice managed to avoid direct military involvement in the conflicts..." [after Agnadello 1509]. One wonders what Venetian troops were doing at Marignano 1515, or at Naples 1528 to name but two appearances of Venetian armies or units...

Anyway, I am certainly biased for this is the volume I was waiting for since I first heard of FOG-R in planning, but even then I fail to see how this can be termed "bland". I have all the FOG army books and know of some I have barely touched after the first skimming. This one will see LOTS of usage.

For those who (pre-)ordered direct from Amazon.co.uk, I am now able to share why you don't yet have your copy. They have not yet ordered them, at least Osprey have not received an order from Amazon.co.uk. Don't hold your breath, even though Osprey have a warehouse full of them.

However, they must have ordered and received them, as they have been trickling them out over the previous ten days. Just not in my direction.
