Unit formations

Post by imanfasil »

I saw that a formation has to be rectangular so a 6base unit of MF would have to be 3x2, 2x3, 6x1, or 1x6. Using expansion and contraction rules I am able to break this rule correct?

My medium foot starts out like this facing up:

xxx
xxx

It then advances and expands a base to be:

xxxx
xx

Is that legal?

Thanks,
James

Correct. The rearmost rank may contain a different number of bases to any others. So your non-rectangular legal formations could be 4-2 and 5-1.

With 8 bases you could have a 3-3-2 etc.

Just to be clear... I cannot begin the game in a non-rectangular formation? (obviously the purpose of the T shaped formation is to get 5 missile dice not 4 and a wasted half dice).

Thanks!

If you want to deploy 4 and 2 that is fine.

Bear in mind with missiles that it is not the number of bases in each shooting BG but the number of bases shooting at each target.

Depending on the situation, the extra die from a 4-2 formation might still easily be wasted, if an end base ends up with a single die against a 4-base battlegroup, ~and~ you could be exposing your battlegroup to extra shots.

decisions decisions :?

Basically you can forget about the idea of BGs being in rectangular formations. They do not have to be in rectangular formations. The only rule is that all ranks must have the same number of bases, except the rear rank can have fewer bases.
