15mm or 25/28mm bases?

Post by Paboook »

I am wondering which scale seems to be more popular.

We started to play FoG using figures from our huge collection of 1/72 plastics. These are still on the old 50 mm bases for our old abandoned system. I am not sure which FoG scale to choose. I would prefer 15mm bases (40 mm width), as it saves lot of space on the table and allows to use more massive armies. Unfortunately, many models (chariots, elephants etc.) in 1/72 have problems with the width and almost always with the depth.

The best fitting seems to be 50mm width. Do you think the plastics are enough popular to created special base sizes for them? We don't want to make mess in potential games with other players.

I'd be glad for your suggestions. Thanks :)

I am sorry, this should probably go to the main discussion and not to the rules section. Please, feel free to move it to the proper forum.

To be perfectly honest, it depends on who you want to play against.

If you want to go to open competitions then you must base your figures as per the rules. If you play within a closed circle, then as long as all bases are on the same frontage that are not miles out from the stated guidelines then you will be OK.

As towards the popularity of 15mm or 25mm, then again it depends upon what part of the world and what part of the country you come from?

It is no good saying that there are vastly more 15mm players if everybody within 25miles of you plays 25mm. Have to give us a clue there I am afraid!

Dave's comments are good.

FWIW my 1/72nd figures are all based on 25/28mm bases, it is a struggle getting them to fit on 15mm ones.

I have several 1/72 scale plastic armies and I based them all on the 25mm basing system for the rules I was using, one of them was for DBA, which is still in retirement as my local opponent and I decided to do 28mm figs, oh well for a little bit i thought they might make it back out again.
