Basing Marching Legionaries
Just got a set of Marching Legionaries for my birthday.
Warlord Games 28mm.
Now to base them.
2 on a 30mm deep base?
My reasoning being that they are unarmoured and not ready to fight immediately.
Armoured and ready to fight would be 4 on a 20mm deep base.
What have other people done?
Many thanks
Nik

Unless you want them for a diorama, could you return them and get them replaced with fighting troops ? They won't be much use to you in FOG otherwise, so the question of how to base them does not really matter.
I did see a game at a show once where a Roman marching column was ambushed. Marching legionaries were used at first unit they had deployed into battle formation.

Yes, I 'd thought about something like that but I'm not sure how you'd get it to look right. Maybe they can be converted from marching to poses looking like they are preparing the camp, or patrolling on guard, etc.
Also, I'd imagine that you'd get quite a lot of bits in the box that would be very useful in a camp diorama. Shields wrapped up for travelling, spare weapons, packs, etc.

I just had a look at the Warlord games website and realised that these are metal figures, so that means they don't come with lots of bits and aren't easily convertable. So that means they aren't so useful.
I'm really not sure why Warlord made these particular figures. I can't see there being much (if any) demand for them amongst wargamers.

I've got plenty of Legionaries ready for combat,
Also have plenty of Camping Legionaries.
I want to use the Marching Legionaries for a possible scenario, ambush which a poster mentioned earlier, which is why I want the appropriate basing.
So if somebody could come back with a helpful answer I would be grateful.

And being unarmoured doesn't count for anything?

Not if they represent armoured troops. Armour rating in the rules is the effect their aermour normally had during battle. It may be a big shield or a breastplate or something else. If your opponent rolls a load of hits it means they didn't get it on fast enough or use it well. If he misses them all they did.nik_green wrote:And being unarmoured doesn't count for anything?

putting the arg into argumentative, except for the lists I check where there is no argument!

So is the question really - what is the best way to treat legionaries ambushed in march column (and not wearing armour) under the rules, for a specific scenario ? And then the basing would follow on from that.
You could treat them as usual (HF Impact Foot), but one quality grade down and only protected.
Or maybe treat them as MF Protected, Light Spear, Swordsmen.

Thanks.
That was the information I was aiming for, just unsure of my understanding of the rules.
