sorry but I don't understand
what does this sentence mean:
"It can be from 1 to 2 fortification depths in width."
page 170 of rules book .

I think this is for the more gifted terrain modelers who like to make snazzy pieces that turn the rest of us green with envy when we see it.
Your obstacle terrain piece can be up to double the width of a Field Fortification base.
So on page 164 it shows the depth for field fortifications can be 15-20mm [20-30mm] per base.
Now if you want to model a nice looking drainage ditch with steep sides and rushes growing out of it for example you can make it 30-40mm wide [40-60mm] for that extra visual aspect. Also means you can go hog wild on that nice looking stone wall with perhaps trees etc flanking it.

As per the basing sizes in the rules the the sizes I gave are 15mm [25mm]

Basically the extra base sizing is for visual appeal, it does not affect movement over the obstacle regardless of size, you still have to be behind the base edge of the obstacle to get its benefit
