Mirliton vs Legio Heroica for Muslim armies

Post by frederic »

Hi,

My Warring States army is nearly finished, my Kushan project has been aborted cause the army is too complex for me to play with, so I currently search for a new army to paint.
One of my choices are Muslim cavalry armies and the two ranges Legio Heroica / Mirliton look really nice.

1) Does anybody know if size of the two ranges are similar ?
It doesn't seems the miniatures could be mixed on the same BG but I only need that two BGs side by side doesn't look too different in size or quality.

2) Am I right to think that with the main core of such an army I will be able to play Muslim cavalry armies from 9th to 14th century, offering me to choose the most suitable army list for the tactics I like to play on the table ?

Thanks for all your comments ;)

I think that the Legio Heroica are more chunky. But when I get around to it I intend to make Dailami & Kurasanian armies with a mix of those, Kurasan minis and essex and Lurkio's dailami and anything else I can on the same bases. I am doing this for my late medievals and I reckon they look just fine. In fact I think that mixing them on bases confuses the eye into seeing them in a much more uniform way than it would if they were in seperate BG's, though this is just my theory as i haven't done the different makes in different BG's thing.

I just compared the two manufacturers' minis I have available. Sadly, they are unrelated lines - Legio Heroica Mongols and Mirliton Etruscans.

The horses do not compare, as the Mongols are on steppe ponies, and the Etruscan horses are the very elegantly proportioned types seen in much of antique Italian art.

Comparing the riders with each other, and with the Mirliton infantry, the figure height is virtually identical, with the Mirliton figures being a touch more slender, but very close. The exception is the Etruscan light cavalryman who is downright scrawny. Setting that one aside, and setting the mounts aside, the armoured riders compare very closely, and could easily be mixed as far as scale is concerned.

A consistent painting style does MUCH to pull together minis from different manufacturers. Another trick is to place slightly shorter minis on a shim when basing them. Flocking and the subjective eye does the rest.

I think you will be able to mix these two lines without any problems.
