Rendera (plastic) bases for FoG??

Post by Empgamer »

Anyone used these at all?? Must admit I've gone off MDF a little due to the height and was pointed in the direction of this company:

http://www.renedra.co.uk/webstore.html

Think i will be giving these ago for my next 4 FoG armies but with one reservation. I don't see 40 x 15mm listed as a base size which I find really bizarre given the dominance of the WRG basing system in ancients/medieval gaming. Seems a strange gap in the line. I did mail them and they said they would consider it. I pointed out the situation with WRG basing so hopefully they may reconsider. Very strange???

Realised I was in the 'Rules' section AFTER I had posted this, not the modelling section I had been in!!

You are obviously referring to the sentence I wrote.

Ah, apologies. There wouldn't have seemed much of need to post a smart-alec comment to most people given my comments at the end of the thread. Wondered if you COULD read. Still, takes all sorts!

Heh, have we met?

BTW, those bases look pretty dumb. Bad mix of sizes. Plastic.

Get some LITKO wooden bases.

http://www.litkoaero.com/

They have the thin sizes you want, come in the right dimensions, and can be magnetized, etc.

Free of these basing dilemmas, you'll have a clear head and won't find yourself wandering into the wrong forums, picking fights with notorious trolls. Who knows? You might even meet a girl.

Wargamer meets girl. Even Pixar wouldn't do that.

On topic though I prefer MDF bases. 2-3mm thick, so quite chunky and easy to handle. Don't like thin plastics as you have to pick everything up using the figures.

Magister Militum black plastic bases. All sizes you might want. Never use anything else nowadays.

Thanks for that, don't know how I missed those!! I used MDF a lot before and while I'm quite happy with it I find that some times the cutting needs tidying up (and I get bored enough cleaning up minis - figs not skirts) and the edges sometimes pose a difficulty in needed to be sealed for painting as I think they look really scruffy in just bare MDF. I'd not considered using plastic until I based some 15mm stuff for Flames of War (WWII) and found it seemed to work well. Nice and light too so picking up by the mini is not a problem.

I might look at the Litko ones, esp the 1/8mm thick ones, that said, at that height I may as well go the Navigator route at £5 for 50.

Another vote for Magister Militum bases; used to use mounting board but have switched to MM entirely over the past year or two

The litko ones seem nice. The only problem I can see with them is that they use 3mm thick (at most) for their bases whereas all the ones I have are 4mm )and I prefer them that way). 10 dollars for a hundred seems a good deal too!

You get a sprue of Renedra plastic bases with each box of 25mm Perry plastic Wars of the Roses infantry (quite probably in their other plastic figure boxes too, but I can't speak from personal experience) You get an eclectic selection of sizes, none of them 60mm wide, so they're no use to me in the first instance.

http://www.perry-miniatures.com/index2.html

... still, they're probably useful for ~something~, maybe as sub-bases for smaller groups of 2 or 3 25mm hard plastic figures, welded on with polystyrene cement. The hard plastic can be easily customised.

I use Aliatar bases, make of mdf, he is a guy who sells the bases in the FOG tournaments and other wargames events, amazing quality and good price. I have a lot of bases of this brand because a friend who opened a shop, he has to close (he had twins  ) and it was left to me.

Litko do do a new 0.8mm thick ply base. Rendera do a variety of sizes including many 40mm wide ones, just none with 15mm depth.

Yeah, a lot of my figures are on nice 1/4" (maybe 3/8"?) wood bases made from Home Depot large paint stirrers that used to be exactly 40mm wide. You could load up on the sticks and knock out bases on a chopsaw. Then HD changed their sizing. :(

Now I use the thick (3mm) Litko bases for new armies and/or complete rebasing. I still have some of the HD bases for adding bits to older armies.

IMO, thin bases kind of suck. Don't like having to handle the figures instead of the base. They also tend to fumble into each other when moving groups unless you have trays.

For example, here are some of my Kushites on thick HD bases:

Here are some of my Spaniards (SHNC in development) on the 3mm Litko bases:

Besides tournaments, where can we find these bases? Can you post a website to look at? How thick are they? I am now looking for 4mm bases to fit with the ones I already have.
