Reloading on new computer

Post by ssneadsmith0216 »

I finally broke down and got a new laptop that should handle this game without any problems. Now, I am trying to reload the game from the file I saved before and it is giving me problems. I originally downloaded the demo and then bought it getting the license number, etc. It later loaded up the patches etc.

Now, I am taking the same downloaded file and it will not fully install. It is saying something about a missing java something or another. Can you give me some insight or suggestions how to get this thing loaded on this computer. Is there another file I can get after providing my license number, etc.?

When you purchased you should have received a full new download file - this is the one you need. Look up your order at www.findmyorder.com.

OK, re-downloaded the "download" file, tried to install again and here is what I got:

The Java (TM) VM could not be started. Please restart the installation. You may use the parameter "/manual" to download or manually select a different VM.

Help please

Which version of CEAW do you have? If you have the gold version you should be ok as it was created more recently and should be Windows 7 compatible. If you have the original version it was created long before Windows 7 was even known about and some people have isues with it. It is an issue of Windows 7 not being fully backwards compatiable and unforunately not something we can fix :(

original one....one of the early ones to buy. I had updated the old one and had not used it in a while.

Is it within the license to get a copy of the newer version? If so, how do I go about that?

We do have a way to give you all the upgrades for free - just download the Gold zip. This would give you everything the gold players have for free, but this wont help you if Windows 7 wont even install the game. However we we dont have a way to issues a full new copy for free which is what you'd need. Currently the only way to get the Windows7 compatible version is to buy the Gold installer and the serial number you'll need :(

I just wanted to repeat this is a backwards compatability issue of Windows 7 and not something we can anything about for a game that launched years before the OS :(

I also have the original CeaW and I managed to get everything working on Windows 7 by making a ZIP of the folder structure of CeaW on my Vista PC. I placed this on an external hard drive and installed it on Windows 7. It worked directly and no new installation was needed.

So a workaround for you could be to install CeaW on a Vista or XP computer. ZIP the Slitherine folder structure and then unzip than on your new PC. I'm not sure where the serial number is placed, but maybe with the old version you only needed it to activate the installation and then it allows you to put the files on the computer.

At least it's worth a try to install on a PC with an older operating system and grab the file structure from there so you can place in on your new computer.

I got this to reload on my old computer but I need to get the license approved next. Do I need to do all of the updates first before ZIPPING it and transferring it? I will contact Slitherine to get the work around from the license.
