Bit of a biff question, and in one diagram in the book it may indicate the answer but:
If 4 bases of DH in one rank hit a unit of horse in two ranks does the impact have to take place between to bases on each side or can the DH hit the horse in such a manner that 3 bases are in contact with 2 bases?
Likewise 2 units of 6 P&S hit a unit of 6 P&S at impact does it have to be 3 bases vs 3 bases or can the two units put 4 bases against 3 bases?
cheers,
Nick

Apart from the fact that overlaps do not count at impact (which is part of the impact/melee design philosophy), you always fight with equal number of bases in impact, even if one side has 3 bases in partial frontal contact with 2. This is to stop people deliberately attacking at funny angles to set up such situations.
FOG tries to get away from the geometrical ploys that have beset some previous rules systems.

Cheers again. We had a situation where two battle groups impacted into a single one (All 6 base P&S) moving straight ahead without wheeling etc (they were next to each other with no gap). It meant that 4 bases were facing 3 with a slight overlap on each side in a similar way to the diagram on page 81.(Which has 3 bases facing 2).
It still worked after a short discussion and we went with 3 bases vs 3 but the defenders hits (he missed) would have been divided between the two attacking units.
