Dragoons Fighting

Post by kadeshuk »

After last night's game we had a bit of an unresolved discussion re dragoons in hand to hand combat; do they count as Light Foot (1 per 2 vs light horse & battletroops) or as a fighting type of their own (1 against everyone , 2 in impact) . Reading the rules only produced 2 different points of view - which is correct?

Dragoons are Light Troops but they are not "Light Foot", which is a separately defined Troop Type.

They are "Other troops".

So the latter.

With limited experience they are better shooting than fighting evading them if possible is a better plan IMO

I found 3paks to be very brittle and undependable, both autobreaking and cohesion-faltering too quickly!!!! (But having two 3paks instead of one 4pak was niiiiiiice!!!!) :D

I like Dragoons in 3s very much, but I think of them as sniping troops, not fighting troops (in most circumstances).

Dragoons in 4s are better for taking hits and tests, but I believe Dragoons have little business getting into an exchange with opposing troops able to shoot back effectively. Even with their terrain abilities, they should also generally avoid close combat - seeking always to get on the enemy's flank or rear unless tormenting those unable to respond from their front.

My 3 pak of French League of Augsburg Dragoons had an enjoyable night shooting down some NMA pistols. Evading when charged, but moving back to 3" to fire 3 dice.

Most of my troubles come from fighting other dragoons it all being down to luck and the roll of a dice.

Two things we have discovered so far, Dragoons will die if they get caught in melee, and they can't out shoot a pike and shot unit so not good to stand and try to shoot it out with them. Artillery is also not really great for Dragoons to be standing in front of.
