Curse those Royalist Cavaliers!!! How do I counter them??!!

Post by Blathergut »

So how does a poodle-pie enjoying Parliament commander fight those dang Royalist cavaliers?

>They are cheaper than my determined horse but fight the same.
>They can be unarmoured and tucked in with commanded shot = fight the same.
>If I don't charge them, I take these irritating pot-shots from the commanded shot with all the inherent horror of a death roll.

So, how do I counter them?

I have used artillery angled across the flank. That does tend to make them skittish about moving across the field of fire. But I think that dastardly deadtorius has figured out he just needs to streak across and get into it and let one poor BG suck up the arty fire to save the rest.

So, how have you been countering the cavaliers + protected shot? Is it just a matter of hoping the dice gods favour me? Or have you used some little tactics or such that helped?

Choose nasty terrain in 12MU diameter chunks and get one on each flank. Then anchor a pike and shot BG on that so that it does not suffer the threatend flank modifier and put a 4 base BGs of dragoons in the nasty stuff - let the commanded shot play with that and see how they get on - even better he might charge his Cavaliers into you frontally. Keep the mounted behind and slightly towards the centre so that it can provide support and use it's ZoI. This covers a lot of the table but you have to make sure your centre is not now too thinly spread. Keep the medium artillery positioned so that if he tries to go round your solid flank with the Cavaliers or Command Shot and into the centre he will have to take at least 2 rounds from 2 Mart - that then becomes 2 free AP to you.

Ya...will see. I'd forgotten that dragoons count towards iniative points...so missed out on a +1. If I can get woodlands, it may cause him some probs. :)

You can also try placing your cavalry in support of the infantry...keep your own cavalry out of the way where he can't reach you. Cavaliers against foot, at least non-poor pike/shot, aren't gonna fare too well.

if your horse are inferior, which is common against cavaliers, then your horse have to take on a support role to your foot.

That's what I'm planing to do with my Scots Covenanters. Unarmored lancers? Yeah, right...

At least the cavaliers are expensive troops.

Oh, and lots of terrain...especially terrain you can shoot over that he can't move over. IF you can force him to move toward you, maybe you can make him make mistakes...well, maybe... :?

countering cavaliers

You can also try to place your horse in two ranks, two deep and then make a move past their front. You can wheel far better than can they and, if done carefully, you should be able to hit them in the flank or rear.

Try moving your 2-rank horse past teh cavalier front...they can only turn 45-deg...you can turn over 90-deg.

Well four front Cavaliers are pretty much stretched out to the table edge, so not likely he gets too many chances to flank me, although in our last game he did since I ran my Cavaliers in two deep formations, does make it easier to get them to move about the table, and since I will likely only ever hit two enemy in impact I can expand out in melee.

feed them a single unit of the cheapest mounted you can get.... put your in single ilne..... you knwo they will get beat. but behind them manouver some infantry, maybe pike gathered into single units, he can crash into them.......

or, put a single line of poor horse in front.. triple move forward, then evade every time he charges yuo.... in the meantime, put the good stuff through the rest of his army.....

or just knock them off the table when he isnt looking ; )

Horse can't evade. (To prevent such unhistorical tactics)

Horse cannot evade......I'm going to remember THAT. Hey...THE man should know, rbodleyscott DID write it.

Just getting started in FoGR. We will be buying the suppliments. My little group and I will be wandering around here seeking knowledge.....Just like what I learned about "horse" in this thread.
