ZOI, Contractions, and Orb Formations

Post by kal5056 »

A couple of questions .

If a BG of Spear (4 wide and 2 deep) is in the ZOI of 2 BG's (one to thier front and another to thier side) can they go into orb.
a) Does this count as a contraction while standing still or does the fact that the BG contracts make it "A Move further away from the opponent on the flank).

Can a BG of LH (2 x 2) that is in the ZOI if another BG contract and put 2 of the bases in front of the others to touch a camp?
Does a 1 mm movement parrallel to the front edge of a BG count as "Making a move ending further away from the enemy?

Thank You

Forming orb is a formation change (as is a contraction) and not movement. P. 122 says forming orb uses the same rules as a normal contraction ( 2nd bullet, 2nd sentence) which would imply that it is not movement.

Contracting is not allowed if you are stationary and in the restricted area of another BG (p 74 3rd sub-bullet).
Contracting is by placing front rank bases in another rank as long as you end in a legal formation (p. 46). The examples on the same page imply the contracted bases are placed behind the other front rank bases.

As for the 1mm parallel movement, page 74, 4th sub bullet left hand side, would seem to answer your question. If a BG that is the restricted area of another BG and only moves 1mm parallel to the pinning BG, it could not end up farther away than it started if it remains partially in front of the pinning BG as it must per the rules on Restricted Area.

This is covered in the FAQs - #19. The short answer is no you can't.

Since you can't contract in a restricted area I suspect the answer is no - but I'd need to see a before and after diagram to give a definitive view.
Does a 1 mm movement parrallel to the front edge of a BG count as "Making a move ending further away from the enemy?
If the move is parallel, it is clearly not further away - so again, in my view, the answer is no.

The restricted area is there for a purpose - it restricts movement. Sounds like someone is trying to create some wriggle room that isn't there.
