Live update virus from visiting Field of Glory Website

Post by TheGrayMouser »

Hello, not to be an alarmist but more of an informational thing, i was on the Slitherine forums last nite and decided to check out the Field of Glory website, navigated to it, clicked on the resources area and while it was displaying up some tournement results i suddenly had , i guess is what called a drive by virus/trojan attack, ie suddenly i had a bunch of popups from a bogus virus detection sofware (Live Update) claiming my computer was infected etc etc... I was able to use control alt delete to close down several bad processes before i lost admin rights.... The next step was a hard shut down and reboot in safe mode to get rid of this pesky thing, all in all 3 hours of wasted time to fix some scumbags idea of fun/make some quick $ scheme.

Anyways , just throwing this out there, I am not computer savvy enough to know if the owners of the FoG website can "clean up" or "scan" their site if it has been hijacked by malware or not. Just make sure you have all the latest updates for your browser, malware removers etc before prowling around on the web, apparently even niche wargame sites are not off limits :D

Thanks - I dont know what might have caused it but we're part way through a a complete redesign so hopefully it will all be fine once the new site launches.

Sounds good!

I know what caused it: sneaky Red Russians :D (actually , my understanding is that most of these types of attacks that try to trick you into buying their software to "remove" the virus are actually Russian in origin, likly do to the fact that the laws regarding such blackmail schemes are lax or non existent.
