28mm basing Cav ?

Post by Keith »

I am painting some 28mm Warlord plastic ECW cav at the moment.

So I have some basing questions.

40mm depth is too small ? Would 60mm depth be OK game wise ?

2 or 3 Cav / base ? How many warlord cav do you fit on a base ?

I'm think 3 is a little bit too tight , how close did ECW cav fight , were they stirrip to stirrup ?

So I am think 2 cav on a 60mm square base , with slight angles and nice basing to fill the base up.

Thanks for you thoughts in advance :)

Deadtorius and I have been painting up the Warlords horse and have them 3 to a 40mm depth base. It is tight. You have to fit each base so that the next base will fit beside/behind it. But I would think two to a base wouldn't look quite right.

I line them up as I glue them down and make sure the horses heads and tails don't collide, and they will fit side by side before the glue sets. 3 horses to a base looks good and if you juggle a bit while the glue is still wet you can fit them on no problem. Some of them you will have to off set slightly from facing straight forwards but once they are on the table its not a noticeable thing. I like the Warlord figs but some of those horse tails that stick straight back make it a bit of a challenge. Once you do up some of them you will figure out which horses work better for front rank (tail more or less down close to the body) and which work out well for out back ( tails flying high and straight back) also which horses work better up front than out back. I found the horses with their heads lowered were best for shooting pistols and made good front rankers as the lowered heads were a bit more difficult to get past the flying tails. They actually fit on the base size ok.
Good luck with them.

I think they look a little bit silly so cramped on 60 by 40 base. 2 cav (or one light horse side on or at an angle) on a 60 by 50 looks ok spacing wise. The warlord figs are probably modelled with wab 25 by 50mm basing to mind. IMO its another misse dopportuity for standardised base sizes in 28mm

There are some 3-base warlord cavalry here on 60x40.

I didnt see a problem with fitting them - OK, you have to glue some at a slight angle so the tails fit, but to be honest Ive seen 15mm cavalry which are harder to fit on 40x30 than these were to fit on a 60x40

I have had similar problems over the years fitting figures to bases especially when you try to fit 4 Cavalry to a 3 or 2 Cavalry size base.

Firstly you can offset the 3 figures so that the middle one is lined up with the front and the side ones line up with the back. In a 4 figures per base just offset them the same way. That should take up any width problems and actually looks realistic when you see them in line.

If the problem is the length of the horses then warm them up (very important with metal horses) and then turn the tails and twist the necks of the horses. This actually looks good as you can end up with every horse in a slightly different pose.

You can warm them up enough under a normal desklight.

I hope that helps.

I often base my cavalry in a slightly triangular formation with the center horse slight ahead and the side horse slightly behind. It generally guarantees that two rank cavalry fight together well.

I base mine on 20*45mm. The 5mm make up for a world of a difference, while not violating the 40mm length too hard.
They can then be neatly arranged into 60*45.

It works for WG, WF and Eureka (nice Ordonnance archers!). Still waiting for my TAG to arrive.

Thanks guys.
I have based them 3 to a base on 60mm x 40mm.
I will post a picture when I finish the bases.

Deadtorius and I will post a photo-filled AAR at some point (once we have a solid 600 pts or so painted).

I didn't even try to put any cav on 60 x 40. 60 x 50 is the way to go.

Yes I see the warlord figs are not bad. I am doing gripping beast in 28s and with large round shields on the MTD basing them is a knightmare.

Cant stagger them so the shields maybe overlap into a gap instead of just hitting whatever is beside them? never seen the figs so no idea what they are like.

I could stagger them only by increasing the base depth. I also have the added complication that everyone locally only has 28s based for WAB so the cav is 25mm by 50mm.

That means the only options are (if we want consistant base sizes between armies) basing two cav to a 60 by 50 sabbot or increasing to a 75mm wide standard for Fog bases to accomodate 3 cav.

If doesnt pick up locally I dont want to be stuck with a whole army based for Fog and no opponents.

The beauty of using 20*45 is that you can put these three abreast, two on top of a 60*45mm base for light cav, or one each on top of a prepared 25*50mm (just add 2mm of basing along the border) - when playing WAB.
