Hi
Why exactly are strathbogies superior ?
Reason given is they were thought to be superior
Apparently the irish can win against superior numbers
attack cavalry
Split into small groups and fire into the rear of cavalry but they are not
But strathbogies are
Have you guys got a new revisionist history of montrose
Can you tell me what it is and i will get it from amazon

That their performance justifies it - IIRC the Osprey on Auldearn covers it quite well (and isn't a bad, reasonably up to date, view on Montrose's army as a whole).

Steve, I guess at the end of the day if the Irish had been superior you would not have raised the point re Strathbogie Regiment and accepted it on the basis of historical performance. As mentioned there was a lot of debate on the Irish being superior or not. As mentioned earlier the judgement went against them albeit not unanimous.
If you don't agree then against opponents who are happy to go along then make them superior and just pay the added points. From memory I suspect they would not have got the swordsmen rating as well as being superior. Indeed they are the only list in all the books I have seen who get this combo. So make them superior pike and shot but take swordsmen away.
As an aside I recall one player under Fog Ancients who insisted that cavalry should be able to do all the turns etc of light horse and just have a reduced move and intended to play the game that wayI would have been happy to play him on that basis provided he accepted my pursuing troops always got an additional 4 inches movement when chasing them.
