Triumph of the Will, by Leni Riefenstahl, was and is widely regarded as one of the most effective propaganda films of all time. America's answer, Why We Fight, by Frank Capra, (yes, the same guy that did It's a Wonderful Life), was a weak and feeble response, by any objective standard.

Because of the raw gut-level impact of her work, she has been widely imitated in every video venue from Hollywood to Madison Avenue. But the same people who build upon her work also call her a nazi tool. After the war, Riefenstahl was widely vilified for her wartime propaganda films. It was impossible for her to work in film in postwar europe. But people from George Lucas to Mick Jagger still acknowledge the potency of her work.

For the record, nothing in this post was intended as commentary on any Slitherine game. It's just that CEAW has rekindled my interest in the WWII period, and I've been doing a bit of online research. Through a rambling and circuitous route, I wound up reading the wikipedia entry on Riefenstahl, and was moved to share the two photos above with my friends here at the forums.
