I wonder if we close Notepad++ faster than the program can save the file?

I'm pretty sure that's impossible, it wouldn't respond to a quit call before finishing the save command.

No its not possible - what could have happened is you saved after it had started loading or forgot to save and reloaded without the changes.

I've done this many times.

He means closing Notepad before Notepad managed to complete the save (I think).
