Starter Armies etc

Several questions prior to a first game on Saturday.

1) Approximately how many points are the starter armies?

2) If playing a smaller than the standard 800 or so points should we reduce the tabel size or the maximum amount of terrain?

As near as we could get to 600 points (and not over).
