Testudo "15mm?"
Anyone know exactly how tall the testudo line of 15mm TYW models are to the eye?
Do the pikemen fit 4 to a stand?

I agree. I have only seen their ancient Romans and Germans, but they are what I would call 1:72 scale. Most of us are familiar with Xyston. The LARGER Xyston are compatible with Testudo, but only just. Testudo is larger. Testudo will fit the standard bases, but again only just, and they will be tight.DanielS wrote:I've not seen the infantry but the cavalry is quite big, the samples I have are closer to 20mm than 15mm and towers over the rest of my figures (Essex and Matchlock) to such an extent that I won't use them on the same table due to the Testudo figures being too large.
I hope this helps.

Only as a very tight fit, too tight to my eye - I'm basing them at 3 to a base.khurasan_miniatures wrote: Do the pikemen fit 4 to a stand?

Thanks Nick, I am in 2 minds about ordering an Army from them because of size and price, so your pics should help. I have already nearly decided that the size should be OK really as long as the whole Army is their figures. The big question is can I justify the price ? or should I use Friekorps instead ?

Well, IMO, you get what you pay for - if you want the best figures for the period ...Spartacus wrote:Thanks Nick, I am in 2 minds about ordering an Army from them because of size and price, so your pics should help. They certainly are the best on the market. I am also going to build a Polish Force, strangely the figures (Legio Heroica)are designed by another Italian chap called Guiseppe, that are gorgeous - some pictures of the Poles and Turks are in the FOG (R) book.
I used to have a Mini-Figs Swedish Army, nice figures but a little wooden. My Essex Swedes have just gone on ebay, again lovely figures, indeed I am building a "Generic" German army from Essex figures, with two Regts of Friecorps! The Freicorps are lovely little figures the ensign and officer I have a gorgeous, but they are tiny, true 15mm.
Testudo are pricey but you get what you pay for and their troubles are over, both of my orders to the UK have taken less than 5 days.

According to this link they are 18-19mm from bottom of foot to eye level:

I am in the process of ordering some myself. The shotte I will certainly do 3 to a base, the pike I may do likewise....timmy1 wrote:Nik - you should be burnt as a heretic for the comment 'I'm basing them at 3 to a base'.
I also wonder if for FoGR if it would make sense to do some of the pike on 40x40 bases with some on 40x20s as the third base/change...

Is anyone not painting a swedish army?nickdives wrote:I have just painted a Swedish Army, later this week I will take some photos of them with my Essex stuff, and Freicorps who are nice but tiny! This should giver a good comparison,

Seriously though what woudl be a good counter to a swedish army. What wouldnt they like to face?
A Swedish army is fairly flexable, early and late periods of the TYW, conflict against the Danes and of course against the Poles. Of course they are a gang of blokes with P&S etc so ECW either side as well, or any other participants of the TYW.
In answer to the origional question in the modeling thread I have posted some photos comparing ESSEX and Testudo and showing how easy it is to put 3 pikemen to a 40 x 20 base!

Doesn't it come out a very small army? I haven't run it through the army builder to 600pts, but with even the commanded shot getting their own regimental guns, it has to be small. So even one of the ECW armies will out-gun it and hopefully get around it?

I think that is the danger for the Swedes: getting flanked. They are hard as nails to the front, but--being expensive--will be narrow. Can they blast through their frontal opponents, or will they get picked apart and defeated in detail? This is all said before I have played any games, though, so take it for what it's worth.Blathergut wrote:Doesn't it come out a very small army? The point is that everyone in their time period usually gets 6 bases per BG and they get 7 needing extra hits to cause a minusBlathergut wrote:expendablecinc wrote:Is anyone not painting a swedish army?nickdives wrote:I have just painted a Swedish Army, later this week I will take some photos of them with my Essex stuff, and Freicorps who are nice but tiny!
