crossbows

Post by Grandviceroy2018 »

i need to remount my crossbows from my old wrg armies and was wondering how they will be represented
in the game....in the rule book the only reference to that issue is in the sample french army list where it shows them as light troops.

will that be the norm in the upcoming army lists?

In most armies they get the choice of being fielded as LF or MF. Some only get MF.

on the average, about how many crossbows of medium and light foot do the earlier armies field?

as i am going to remount my crossbows some as medium and some as light, i'd like to know about how many of
each i'd need for, say, a typical 800-900 point army of the italian renaissance...

the sample french list in the main book has 8 light foot crossbows....is that about the norm?

Well it varies quite a bit.

Some armies have up to 18 bases of MF or LF, some only up to 12. For some reason the Italian states list has no LF crossbowmen, only MF, but the Venetians have both.

The French have 8 compulsory MF or LF crossbowmen before 1526, but they turn into Arquebusiers after that. Most armies switch from crossbow to arquebus around that date if not before.

If you have enough figures, make 18 bases of each and you should be covered for most armies. If not, then I doubt it you will ever want to field more than 12 LF crossbowmen.

As obsolescent troops, the rules are not particularly kind to crossbowmen. The only real virtue of MF crossbowmen under the rules is their cheapness, though they should be pretty good at defending fortifications.

thank you.
i have 44 crossbowmen so that gets me the dozen LF that i will ever need and half way to the dozen MF...

...i have not had these guys down from the shelf in the 14 years since i moved from washington DC to Connecticut....nobody up here played wrg renaissance and even though i played in and ran tourneys for it in the 90s at cold wars etc, i just never felt like trying to teach the system to anyone (used to get massive headaches with that set of rules....

i now have a reason to take them off the inactive reserve again! (just as i did with the old wrg ancients, when we got into fog bigtime).

thanks!

can't wait to see the italian wars army lists....about 2/3 of my figures are ecw/tyw, but the other third-- the best, and prettiest, are a papal army....
