what's next?
What's next in the rules pipeline? We've got ancients and ren. coming soon. Napoleonics maybe next year. Are there any plans for other rules sets? ACW, WW2...?

"Nu-uh! I have reactive armor, which negates the HEAT POA!"
"But my HEAT round is from 1975 and your Reactive Armor is from the early 1980's!"
"Well, see, my soldiers go down to protected because my country couldn't afford body armor. So it's a trade-off."
"I don't see any soldiers, all I see is Light Armored and Heavy Tank!"
"Well, who's to blame me for picking the 1980-1983 armored list?"
Oh lordy...
Also:
My light tanks evade your heavy tanks. We move 7". Your missiles only travel four. HAHA!

a wishlist, not a real answer
Well, for me, I like the ancients FOG as it stands. Yes, there are some problems, like the Romans v. Hannibal's Carthaginians, but it stands really solid as a game. I really don't think that my own opinion will warrant much, but my next biggest desire would be a fantasy set of rules (not sci-fi).
Yes, the Renaissance is great. Napoleonic era wars would be cool too (so long as it incorporated some of the plains wars between the US Cavalry and the Native Americans). I would even be excited by pre-WWI era rules (before all that trench warfare mess). But my next big desire would be for some generic fantasy armies. This would probably be the hardest set as there are so many different high fantasy concepts for dragons, elves, dwarves, orcs, and the undead; but if this thread is even glanced at by the game designers, I would like them to know the wishlist one of their dedicated fans.
Keep up the great work!

my guess is that what comes next will be a GW esque cycle of 'improved' rules, first for ancients with FOG 2 already seeping through, followed by army lists, then an 'improved' ren rules set followed by lists, then it the turn of napoleonics to be updated... and this cyle will repeat at a cost to the gamer of all periods of approx 15-20gbp pre month....

Slitherine and Osprey are commercial enterprises so, yes, they will try to make money from their investment. However I think it is a little unfair to say 'my guess is that what comes next will be a GW esque cycle of 'improved' rules, ... and this cyle will repeat at a cost to the gamer of all periods of approx 15-20gbp pre month'. In the two years that FoG:AM has been out I have purchased every book issued bar one. Even had I purchased the lot I could not have spent gbp 360 even at high street prices, certainly nothing like gbp 480 - not even half that. Pre-orders from internet retailers reduces the cost even more.

Though, in two years of FOG AM... spending 360gbp on rules and lists is still 180gbp per year, lets call it 120gbp due to discounts etc....
so 120gbp per year, just for rules, and once you have this set for ancients, theres the ren set, then the napoleonic set, by then another two years has gone by and the cycle starts again....
but no worries Tim.... all just smoke in the wind... and I understand it may sound a little unfair, or even a lot unfair! but its still my main worry with FOG, .... but hey, its a free market, no one forces anyone to buy it, and there plenty of good alternatives at a fraction of the price.... presumably the bhgs will support other rulesets in tourney as well as FOG.......
I could be wrong of course, the improvements to the rules may be released as a free download from this website....
...... time will tell.

The BHGS will offer whatever people will turn up to play, I suspect. In addition to 4 FoG:AM and 1 FoG:R Beta tourney, the most recent BHGS event (Britcon) ofered people the opperunity to play Warhammer, DBM, DBMM, and Armati in the Ancients, with the offer to include others if people wanted it (and 6 games were viable in terms of entrants). There were 8 other non-FoG periods offered.
As for the army lists and rules, I doubt I have spent more than gbp 164 over 2 years and I have everything bar one that has been officially released in the UK. Maybe I have just been lucky in the prices I have paid. Even once I have ALL the FoG:R as well I doubt it will exceed gbp 268 over 3 years.
Regards
Tim

Only if you try to play everything. I don't have time. I also think you are optimistic on the output of their material.chubooga wrote:and this cyle will repeat at a cost to the gamer of all periods of approx 15-20gbp pre month....
And that is still less than the amount I spend on Coffee in a month, and I suspect, less than many gamers spend on tangential luxuries.
Our local store decided to charge two bucks to play. I spend that much in gas to get there. Its worth the price to have a place.
We pay money to have fun.

lol as I said Gents, no one forces anyone to buy.....though Im sure any good marketeers could offer an arguement that whilst no one can be forced they can certainly be influenced....
... as a little extra controversy then the rapid movement for the majority of players from established rule set into using a new well marketted ruleset could be a reasonable example.....
not sure if the spelling correct on that....but hopefully its not too bad!
even without my optimistic view of the possible outputs, and using Tims estimates of his spend over the last 3 years... it comes in at 90gbp per year just for rules/lists.... and that would be a permanent 'tax' to play.....
yep some may spend more on coffee.... food, heating... petrol.. clothes...sweeets..... ladies.... gents.... or whatever.... but it remains my humble opinion that its far too much far too often for me.... and while I dont speak for anyone other than myself, it could be possible that GW style marketings proves too much for other gamers to swallow too....
but hey. on the bright side... got FOG ren today! army is ready..... just need an opponent to get smoe games in before the rules are updated and rereleased

Other than the fact that FoG v2 is being considered, what makes you think that the rest of the rules and army lists will go into a GW style sequence of constant revision? I know that DBM received a number of revisions and maybe that is the model they will use here. If we get to this time next year and there is a FoG v2 announced and revised army list books, then yes this thread has a point. Until then it seems more to be smoke in the breeze.
