Restricted area wheeling

Post by hazelbark »

had an oddity that felt like a barkerism

Unit A pins Unit B on the flank. Unit B is at an angle its front corner is outside the restrict area. So a wheel on its front corner will take it out of the RA eventutally.

Lots of options But....

The unit wanted to wheel forward so it could effect a 3rd unit that is irrelevant for this purpose.

Now the unit that wanted to wheel could not move its full move to get parallel and still stay in the restricted area.

So we played it could not wheel as it would have to wheel short, which is not allowed. The wheel would be cut short by the restriction of having to stay in the RA.

Did we get it right?

IMO you got it wrong.

The pinned BG can wheel as far as possible towards parallel, the fact that to get parallel would mean not being infront of the pinning BG means that it is not possible to wheel parallel but it is possible to wheel until the BG is just in front of the pinning BG. The only allowed wheel would be one that leave the tiniest portion of the base in front of the pinning BG.

It didn't matter so wee played on. The unit was a skirmisher.

But what got us tangled is we felt the rules intent was the wheel baring obstructions or rate of movement.

So you think, and we discussed this, the limit came in in order to stop only at leaving a GT in the RA.

The rule says
Wheel towards that enemy battle group until its front is parallel to the enemy front, or wheel as far as it can towards such a position; advancing thereafter if it wishes to do so.
and
In each of the above cases, the battle group must end its move at least partly in front of the enemy battle group, or the move is not permitted.
Combining the two which IMO is what is intended means that a wheel as far as possible within the constraints of the second part of the rule is fine.
