Saving games mid-stream

Sometimes when I hit "esc", the save scrreen comes up with a list of saved games and a spot on the right side where you can enter an ID for the game to be saved after deleting the words "new save". Other times, the words "new save" do not appear in the right side window and the window does not accept the name of the new save and one has to either return to the current game or lose it. What is causing this to happen?

Is the game available as a hard copy so it can be reloaded if necessary?

You only need to save games when mid-battle. Otherwise it always tracks your progress automatically.

You can simply save or burn the downloaded installer and use it to install again if necessary.
