River of Blood v1.0 RELEASED

Post by insidius »

Here's my next multiplayer map, River of Blood. This map is still a little visually WIP, I just wanted to get some playtesting done.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10165676/Maps_by_Insidius.zip

(this download includes the updated version of A Winter Encounter, as well. Make sure you delete the previous version before downloading!)

This is an escalating engagement that features the US against the Germans in a night mission to capture and cross a few bridges into German territory and capture their HQ. This map is big, plays long, and has lots of reinforcements. The US are attacking a heavily fortified position with the help of air support and the Germans have elite troops, a medic ability and artillery. This map can be pretty bloody for the US at first, but don't worry, you do get more troops.

As always, please feel free to leave questions and/or comments about the map and any balance issues et cetera.

Thanks!

Install Instructions: Download and unpack the Maps_by_Insidius folder into the Multiplayer folder of your Battlefield Academy directory.

I've put up a few MP games waiting for a challenger. Please accept if you'd like, but only accept one challenge from me so that more people can test the map, as well.

US TIPS:

It's far better to push through the initial bridges with losses than it is to hesitate or try to turn back. If you turn back, you'll get delayed on the bridges and incur a far heavier price in lives the second push and might even get caught in a nasty artillery barrage. Just keep moving forward until you get over the bridges, then you can take it a bit slower after that.

GERMAN TIPS:

Hold your lines and stay holed up for as long as possible. Don't be afraid to reposition as necessary, keeping in mind that Allied air support is deadly if you stay in the open too long.

Silly question...

If I play that game on MP, both players MUST have the file Maps_by_Insidius in the same destination folder? I mean both players on multiplayer folder in BBCBA.
Because I follow the install instructions and try to accept a MP challenge, and the game says that I have to download the map. WTF!?!

Do I have to install it in other folder such as My Games folder in My Docs?

I use WIN7 32bits if it can help. :)

Ps: Great map Insidius! \o/

The Maps_by_Insidius folder goes in ..\Battlefield Academy\Multiplayer\ and not in the ..\My Documents\BBCBA\ folder. Hope that makes sense.

Fine. That's what I've done. But I try to accept a challenge and I can't. Maybe the player who post his challenge have another map version? o_O

Could be, as far as I know for 'River of Blood' this is the first version but for 'A Winter Encounter' it's an updated version so maybe it's the initial version of that one.

It could be that the other player put the map in the wrong place. Ask him where he has his map installed.

I'll check with Phil but I think you should always put mods & maps in the maps in the My Doc\My Games\BBCBA\Multiplayer folder. I dont think there is a good reason for ever adding files to the Program files folder. If you break something it might cause all sorts of nasty issues.

That's where I had my maps at first, but everyone else (like, literally) had them in the main install directory, so I pretty much had to move mine to be able to play with other people.

Maybe we should prevent user maps from working this folder to avoid confusion. Having them in different places on different machines is only going to lead to confusion.

Either that, or have the game poll both folders to see if it's in either location, but yeah, only having one folder is probably best and easier, just have to make sure you have a god way of getting everyone on board with the same folder somehow. Not everyone reads the patch notes :P

It makes sense to have all the mods/user scenarios within the ..\My Documents\My Games\BBCBA\ folder; less chance of issues with the base game. And I'm like insidius as tried there first but couldn't get the games to show up.

Can folder location check be forced on the server or is reliant on the player locating the folder correctly? Going for duplication of folders in the Program Files and BBCBA folders could cause even more confusion with versions getting out of sync.

There is never any reason or need to put things into the installation folder. It might save confusion to have a manifest of 'approved' campaigns to prevent this confusion certainly - I thought I had been clear enough, but perhaps the ingame messages aren't as explicit.

Cheers

The first rule of life ... don't rely on people reading instructions, especially if there's more than one way of doing something

I'm going to make it refuse to find any custom scenarios in the main install directory, it will finish ongoing games, but I'll get it to pop up some detailed instructions on where to put the custom games!

Having said that - I want to automate the whole process anyway, which will remove any confusion!

Cheers

Pip
