Congratulations to pantherboy

Post by davouthojo »

To add some colour to pantherboy's somewhat laconic statement of victory.........

I underestimated the Granadine Army - with 81 BPs, over 60 light troops that are very hard to hunt down, and 6 good lancers/knights make it a very good competition army, and in pantherboy's hands................

The terrain was open in the centre, with on each flank a big hill, impassable at the top, steep next contour, gentle hill bottom contour. Ideal for defending with a mix of medium and heavy foot!

Pantherboy concentrated his medium and heavy foot to defend the hill on his right flank, getting there before I did. His knights were scattered in pairs across the map to punch through my cordon. The light horse and foot were everywhere!

I made the wrong call, and decided to try to take the hill AND pen the lights. I didn't devote quite enough strength to either, and this is where the battle was lost.

On the hill, pantherboys bowmen on their steep hill were heroes, pouring on fire when they were not engaged, disrupting attacks on impact. The knights routed any medium or disrupted units. I have never seen defensive spearmen be so effective - never anarchy charging, sitting on their hill like rocks.

In the open, huge patience from pantherboy, firing all his poor crossbows every turn at -1POA, getting rare hits. They stacked up though, the record was one heavy weapons unit, taking fire from 23 units in one turn.........no wonder they started routing towards the end.......and while my cordon pressed forward every turn, pantherboy's knights were picking off and routing isolated units, I had no counter since they stayed away from my spearmen. As the cordon moved forward it got thinner and thinner. Some lights were routed en route, but by the time they were penned in the corner next to the hill, the cordon was so thin the couple of lancers! pantherboy had left could puncture it at will.......and thus the end came........

The above doesn't do justice to pantherboys tactics. When I could have attacked a rear, there was a light horse there, stopping me. Whenever I attacked, it seemed mysteriously to be uphill. Whenever his knights charged, it was into a medium foot and never one of the spears I had tried to shield it with. When you are always at a disadvantage, and don't know quite why, you know you are facing a superior tactician.

Poor generalship, lessons learnt for next time:
>I picked an army with more heavy weapons than spears to control anarchy, underestimating the threat from his 6 lancers
>Don't attack uphill unless you absolutely have to! I could probably have left pantherboy on his hill, thrown a cordon around it and concentrated on the knights and lights, daring him to come off it and attack me.....
>Focused on the main threat, his knights, and left herding the lights until they were eliminated

Congratulations to pantherboy, a deserved Champion, I am left thinking............next time............maybe victory would be too much to hope for, but I could push him as close as iverson did in the semi..........

I'm a sucker for punishment, I'll try SOA again.

One idea - could use a swiss system, rather than knockout.

The rule is that people who have the same number of wins play each other.
Same number of rounds as a knockout, but everyone plays every round, and you get a ranking at the end, rather than just one winner.

More complicated to administer though - you have to do match-ups after all results are in.

Hi davouthojo

Nice writeup, sounds familiar attacking uphill whilst being shot to pieces by hordes of archers....

Swiss option sounds good but too time consuming for me to take on I feel, I'm happy to let someone else take over the helm if that's what people want to play though.

cheers

Only Offensive Spearmen are subject to anarchy. That is why they could occupy the hill without leaving it.

700 Point Results

Post by deeter »

Seleucids (Deeter) 28/57 4,008/18,940 WINS
Sarmations (iandavidsmith) 57/56 5,666/16,800

It was an interesting battle. Half of Ian's lancers were deployed on a large hill surrounded by steep hill sides. They were opposed by several Thracians who could not be dislodged and who did serious damage to the armored cavalry. That proved decisive. Looking forward to round two and am awaiting a challenge from the victor of the match above mine.

I'm happy to run a straight knockout SOA tourney, as it doesn't take much time to organise it after the first round is drawn, anyone interested in playing please post your list choices here being specific where their is more than one option for a list, hopefully we can get sixteen players interested this time but if not it will be another eight player event on a first come first serve basis.

Any thoughts on army size to use this time?

cheers

Hi Matt
I was away on holiday at the start of your last tourney - I would like to join this one please.
If that is possible put me down for Anglo-Irish (late).
