Request for Modders: Desert Rats!

Post by Llanite »

To do a desert rat campaign justice, we really need a jeep model!

We need the Max exporter script first before any models can be created - I think Pip said it would be out by the end of the week :D

Been trying to find a good free solution so people without MAX could have a go, but I think we might need to just go with the MAX crowd initially, until I can find a free tool which has the appropriate functionality :(.

End of the week should be fine for the MAX stuff though.

This is a free 3d package if that helps.

http://www.blender.org/

Not used it myself but here good things about it.

I do use Lightwave and C4D though.Files are interchangeable between these two 3d programs.

It's more about finding one where we can (ideally) import our current assets so we can provide templates for people etc. As well as being able to build an exporter which will match up with our current pipeline. I am looking at Blender for sure - it seems to be the most mature free app out there.

Thanks Pip

There used to be Gmax which is free but not supported any more - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gmax
This site also lists other free 3d modelling programs. I have Max 8 - will the exporter work with that?

The issue with GMax was you had to pay Autodesk if you wanted to build an exporter for it (although people worked out how to work around it by outputting stuff to the debug stream).

I think we use Max 9, but the script should work I think, it doesn't use anything which hasn't been in the scripting language for a lot of versions.

There are free 3D max files available in the net right? Can these be used in the game instead of creating our own models?

The mesh is one part - the animations are another. Then you just need to add in the various special objects which allow us to emit particles, etc.

Argh. It's quite complicated. I have no experience in doing this stuff. :(

Would love to do a Modern US vs. Insurgent mod. The desert map is already there.
