impact wheels and support shooting
Found something new to me last night.
a bg of Xbow in 4:2 formation. I charge in with my lancers. But I cant put in the tiny wheel needed to hit the end of the line to hit a 2:1 formation because
a wheel cannot be made if this would result in less bases being eligible to fight in the impact phase combat
I had alwys thought about this in terms of thefront rank bases, but the rules do seem to say I have to hit the thick bit of the line.
sadly my lancers were slaughterd as they only achieved a single 3 compared to the 5 5/6s from the xbow.

With dice like that will it matter?petedalby wrote:Interesting one Paul - but checking the rules it seems you are correct.
Good to see your dice are as good as ever!
And if you're not bringing LBs to Britcon - what are you bringing?

Im actually taking Post Latin Conquest Byzantine - on a complete whim last weekend after drinking the best part of 2 bottles of wine.
Incidentally, I got caught over the original point at the club a couple of months ago. I am now well aware of this little tinker...

Never thought about that, but cool. Again helps curb gaminess.paulcummins wrote:

Oh i get it and would have done the same. Don't blame you. But as in reality the troops are probably more evenly distributed than the bases, and the "idea" of the game is more commander in chief, you don't know its the thin past until you roll the dice, I like.paulcummins wrote:i was trying to run over the 1 deep section of the line - not really gaminess - hit the thin line of guys with bows rather then the deep bit - wouldnt you try and do the same?
Having loved DBM, I now admit it was too much game and I enjoy FoG more for the parts left behind. I think less gamey bits (always will be some) promotes a better historical general strategy game.

This happened to me on the weekend. A single line of superior armoured cav in column charged my spartan (average) spearmen.paulcummins wrote:i was trying to run over the 1 deep section of the line - not really gaminess - hit the thin line of guys with bows rather then the deep bit - wouldnt you try and do the same?
The closest spearman file was two deep but they wheeled to hit the next file as the rest of my BG was strung out one deep to hover up some LF trying to nip past.

They hit me and expanded to thier left so the best I got was a 4 and they got to roll 4s as well with a slight edge (being superior). I couldnt double up as all of my bases were rolling dice.

We drew so they broke off.
I then advanced 3 inches, contracting by a file to double up and broke them the next round as they werent one deep to evade.
