The odds of catching the LF is not good (actually a 3 out of 36 odds of catching the LF).
Those odds lost me a tournament. I was set up one move away to envelope the Knights. They charged the LF. Caught them. Shredded them so they were in full pursuit and then accelrated rigth though the shooting ranges into impact against the Bow whose only shot became at impact. The gerrneal wasn't with the bow because the enemy was something like 9 MU way when it started. Killed the bow in short order and my envelopement was staring at empty space. All due to the 6-1 pursuit.

Lesson:
The odds of something only matter when the risk of bad result is figured in.

Graham, only person I know who has pulled the Firearm LF trick consistently is one Mr Dalby - when watching his games I never seem to notice him frittering his strike troops but maybe I am not good enough to spot when he is doing so :)

philqw78 wrote:So the knights are more likely to charge then. Which is what I said.
Before the Bow and LF Firearms get into any sort of Bow range the knights often think that moving towards the Bow is not a good idea and head off somewhere else. Of course once the Knights come within shooting range they are not going to stand around.

I tend to run my LF as Superior if possible. Then move the Bow to just within long range and the LF within 2 inches but at an angle to the knights, as Ethan mentioned. A four wide KN BG will then be shot at by 4 dice at 5 and 2 dice at 4 all rerolling 1's. This will give about a 75% chance that the knights will have to take a cohesion test and a 50% chance that they will have to take a death test. If the knights then charge the LF they will end up in short range of the Janissaries as long as they don't roll a 6 (which is not good for the Janissaries if the knights charge straight ahead!). The LF scuttle off to the side ofthe Janissaries and the knights have little chance of catching them.

Martin

Trick? Surely not! Valid tactic - every time!

But as Dan has noted above - it doesn't always work and when it fails the results can be very embarassing. Although with the Superior LF HG you can afford to lose 2 bases and still have a viable BG - how good is that?!!

Pete, alright. How about 'Firearm LF gambit'? Valid tactic might be taking it too far.

Gambit is so much nicer than trick - I could live with that.
