Possibly so, at least one year as I recall it 70-80% of the entries in one theme were one of three armies!hammy wrote:That may have been the case in Dunstable but when I played at my first Roll Call the themes were DBM book 1, DBM book 2, etc. You could have Samurai fighting Normans as a 'themed' game.azrael86 wrote:Rollcall has had working themes for years, way back to Dunstable!
Warfare has for most of the time I remember provided a list of armies and a date range which is a much better form of theme.

We ran a similar tournament here in N. Ireland recently. The requirement was for a minimum 8 bases of Kn and no Swiss. Most of the armies were traditional medieval armies, but two were wall to wall LH with the inimum number of Kn who spent most of their games sitting at the back or out of the way while the LH skirmished. In november , we will have in Belgium, the "First Knight" tournament where the requirements are simple : minimum 8 bases of KN, maximum 8 bases LB and NO elephant
I would suggest that limiting the LH to a maximum (say 8 bases) as well would be good (unless you don't mind fighting skirmishing LH).
Presumably you mean no swiss allies? Either way its a bit odd to pick out Swiss like that, given that arguably other armies like German or low Countries are tougher (because they are harder to flank).DavidT wrote: We ran a similar tournament here in N. Personally I love themes. the problem is you need to have an evil mind and structuree it properly or it will be exploited. Knight theme, but few knights. Elephants them but few elephants as people posted. Too many of those that love themes, let an obvious tiger exploitation in, because they don't think it through. Then the people who think it through are accused of gerrymandering it.

However, I was quite pleased as it meant I didn't take my Swiss but Ordonnance French instead. The Swiss would have had no chance of winning against the Later Hungarians and the Moldavians but I played them both with my French and my LB were excellent, creating much mayhem amongst the LH, enabling me to get a 24-1 against the Moldavian and 13-7 against the later Hungarian.
It wasn't quite 'no Swiss'. The actually restriction was that any Swiss army had to have more halberdiers than pike. As the only Swiss army which can have 8 Kn is the later version from the Burgundian Wars, which can only have a maximum of 24 halberdiers and a minimum of 24 pike, it was impossible to field a legal Swiss army which met the restrictions. The organisers thought that the Swiss would be a big problem for Kn armies, however, as other posters have mentioned, the organisers do not always think through the potential lists and what could be fielded. They saw the Swiss as the problem when it was the likes of Later Hungarian and Moldavian with bucketloads of light horse which were.Presumably you mean no swiss allies? No surprise there to be honest. The problem with the Later Hungarian/Moldovan (also applies to Serbian, probably Polish and some others) is that they can't lose except to a similar army. This I should stress isn't just a FOG thing, some years ago I fought a serbian under DBM, killed all the knights, and of course his LH all ran away.. So I killed way over half the points in his army, and but only won 18-14.DavidT wrote:azrael86 wroteIt wasn't quite 'no Swiss'. Interesting , I'd say that the Halberdiers are the better version, because the pike don't cover the table.
