Restricted area and flanked position

Post by vincent »

In the game I just finished playing with Olivier, we had the following position:

My knights were less than 4cm away completely behind the flank of the archers which also had some crossbowmen to their front.
With the current writing of the rules, the archers are allowed to wheel in an effort to get parallel with the knights (despite the fact that the crossbowmen are in the way). Please also note that even if they could finish the wheel, the wheel will end up with the archers facing the position next to the knight, not in front of them. This seems hard to justify.
I feel that the wheel to get parallel should be allowed only if the enemy is already partly to the front of the unit moving at the start of its move. Otherwise, the unit should turn (90?° or 180?°) first in order to get the enemy inflicting the restricted area at least partly to their front.

Note also that after the wheel was done, the knights did not have a full front beyond the archers front, hence the charge of the knights ended being a frontal one, the line-up involving an almost 80?° reorientation, completely protecting the flank of the knight from the LI (visible in column behind the archers) threat.
Best regards

Vincent
