John - Thanks a lot for your battle report! :D I guess then that Lucena is more or less OK, so I can move ahead with other scenarios. I have a couple for RoR already done, but they need more playtesting, and I have also gathered some information on other battles of the Reconquista which could be interesting.

Lupus - Thanks for your comments! When I first released the Parthian scenarios, there was no unit image with 3 horse archers, so I had to use a unit image with only 2 for the Saka cavalry. I have already updated the "Parthian river crossing" scenario with the unit images introduced in RoR, and there the Saka cavalry uses 3 figures. One of these days I will update the others (but of course I also want to check again the OOBs, the maps, the battle descriptions...)

Cocherel 1364

Post by Examinondas »

Cocherel 1364
Navarrese (30 BGs) vs French (34 BGs)
In 1364 war broke between Navarre and France over the succession to the Duchy of Burgundy. Near the village of Cocherel, a Navarrese army commanded by Jean de Grailly faced a French force under Bertrand du Guesclin. The Navarrese, 1200 men-at-arms and 300 archers including Gascon and English troops, took a strong defensive position on a hill. The French force was larger, perhaps around 1800 men, and included Bretons, Normans, Picards, Burgundians and Gascons. When du Guesclin refused to attack and began to leave the battlefield, the Navarrese abandoned the hill to attack, only to find that the French had feigned their retreat.

Warning! The following screenshot may contain spoilers if you intend to play with FoW enabled.

The scenario is based on Froissart's account of the battle, but there is another source which gives completely different numbers for both sides (6000 for the French and 8000 for the Navarrese, IIRC). Given the lack of importance of the unit strengths in FoG, I think the scenario is OK, however the OoBs are open to discussion.

Some useful links:
- Jean Froissart's Chronicle (the battle of Cocherel is described in pages 313 to 322): http://books.google.es/books?id=jMkRAAAAYAAJ
- Photos of the battlefield today: http://home.eckerd.edu/~oberhot/cocherel.htm
- A nice book about Bertrand du Guesclin: http://books.google.es/books?id=yX0aAAAAYAAJ

Updated with a new version: fixed a few typos and added one more commander to each army. In the Navarrese side it represents the Captal's banner which was kept on (or at least close to) the hill; in the French, the commander of the Gascon reserve. Both elements had an important role in the battle, so the commander status is well deserved. It also helps to make the scenario last a bit longer.

Examinondas wrote:Probably the last scenario of the Parthian series:

Tigris 115AD
Principate Romans vs Parthians
Provoked by the appointment of a pro-Parthian king in Armenia, Emperor Trajan set out for the east in late 113 AD. Confident after a series of successes, the Romans invaded the Parthian homeland in 115 AD. The Parthians presented a fierce opposition at the crossing of the Tigris.

My only specific knowledge of this battle comes from the following paragraph taken from WRG's "The Armies and Enemies of Imperial Rome":
Trajan with probably 8 Legiones made an opposed crossing of the Tigris in face of fierce Parthian opposition, partly by distracting the defenders with feints, and partly by covering his bridging parties with missiles from engines and from archers on ships moored in the stream.
The Heavy Weapons of the German Symmachiarii represent clubs. German clubmen are shown in Trajan's column, and clubs were used (at a much later date) against Palmyran cataphracts (by arabs in the Roman army, if I recall correctly).

As of patch 1.0.3, the AI will not use the bows of the Auxiliary Archers (2 Roman units) or the Saka Horse Archers (5 Parthian units). This should not affect the balance of the battle too much.

For further information on Trajan's campaign in the east see:

BTW, happy new year! :D

Thanks for the heads-up willb! :D

New link for the Tigris 115AD scenario: http://depositfiles.com/files/048ytbc4o

Note this scenario is for the original FOG game - no expansion is required but the set of unit images is rather small, and in particular the Saka cavalry horse-archers use a 2-figures unit image instead of the proper 3-figures one.

Ephesos 498BC

Post by Examinondas »

Ephesos 498BC
Greeks (17 BGs) vs Persians (38 BGs)
At the beginning of the 5th century BC, the Ionian Greeks revolted against the Persian rule. After an unsuccessful attack on Sardis which ended with the city in flames, the Greek strategos, Charopinos of Miletos, retreated towards Ephesos. Artaphernes, satrap of Lydia, pursued them with 1600 cavalry, 6000 sparabara, 2000 Lydian hoplites and the same number of Mysian peltasts. When the two forces finally engaged, the Greek phalanx, consisting of 5000 Ionian and 1000 Athenian and Eretrian hoplites, was deployed with the Cayster river on the left. Only 1200 peltasts and psiloi protected the phalanx's right flank from the attack of the Persian cavalry.

This scenario is based on F.E. Ray's reconstruction of the battle, as presented in his superb book "Land battles in 5th century B.C. Greece". I have reduced the numbers of Lydians and Mysians (from 4000 to 2000 each) to give the Greeks a chance to win. There is still room for changes in the OOBs, so feel free to make comments and suggestions.

A couple of links for the interested reader:
- Wikipedia's article on the Ionian revolt: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ionian_Revolt
- Preview of Ray's book at google books: http://books.google.es/books?id=NECnIjW ... &q&f=false

Note that I have decided to "sign" my scenarios from now on by adding "(Ex)" to the battle title, just to avoid any confusion with the official scenarios.

Lets see if this scenario gathers more interest than Cocherel

Update 2010-08-12: new version with revised OOBs. It should be easier to win as the Greeks now, although the battle is still very hard (more than Lucena!).

Eurymedon 466BC

Post by Examinondas »

Eurymedon 466BC
Persians (43) vs Greeks (26)
In 466BC the Persians began to assemble forces to attack the Greeks once again. Hearing of a Persian army and fleet being gathered at the mouth of the Eurymedon river, the Athenian-led Delian League decided to strike first by sending Cimon of Athens with 200 trirremes. The 350-ship Persian fleet was defeated and the survivors were forced onto the shore. Pherendates, commander of the Persian land forces, managed to rally some 3600 Phoenician marines, which joined his army of 6000 sparabara, 2000 peltasts and 800 cavalry. Enthusiastic after their naval victory, the Greeks decided to take the fight on land and disembarked 8000 hoplites, 1200 lightly-armed rowers and peltasts, and 800 archers. Caught unprepared and demoralized, the only hope of the Persian army was a successful cavalry attack.

This scenario is also based on Ray's reconstruction of the battle, with some small tweaks to improve playability. As usual, comments are welcome (although by now not expected...)

Just wanted to thank you for all your great scenarios. I especially enjoyed Cocherel. There are so few SoA scenarios. Again, great job!

tyrkir - Thanks for your comment! I always thought that nobody liked Cocherel... I have ideas for more SOA battles and still have a few days left of my vacation :)

amenofi64 - Nice to know! Feel free to suggest changes, little is known about the battle so there is room to adjust the OOBs and/or terrain.

BTW, I would like to know if someone has won Ephesos playing as the Greeks. I have only managed to win once... out of 5 tries!

In fact I'm French which may be explains my interest in Cocherel. Also, the battle features Du Guesclin, who's a national hero in France and an extraordinary "character". Last but least, your scenario is mostly a fierce melee with lots of dismounted men at arms on both sides. May be not very subtle but yet so medieval!!

Examimondas or anyone,

All the links for these scenario seem to no longer be valid. Are they available somewhere? The out of date version of Parthian River Crossing is included with Legions Triumphant and it would be good to update it with the one with the RoR images.

Sure, I will re-upload the file this afternoon after work.

I will also send it to KMS, although I was under the impression that he had updated the unit images (I can't check because I don't have LTR)

Edit: I have uploaded the "RoR version" of the Parthian river crossing scenario to depositfiles and megaupload:
http://depositfiles.com/files/c0h24vve8
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=18VNN77V

In this version the unit images of the saka horse archers (which are classified as cavalry, not LH) have 3 figures. I have also sent the file to KMS.

Edit2: Also note that in the "RoR version" the Parthian LH comes in two flavours: the units with black and green tunics are classed as superior, while those in blue and red are average. The LH with a commander is average (obviously because there is guy with a red tunic in the unit )

Thanks for putting the scenario up again. The RoR version definitely enhances playability. It had been a while since I'd played the scenario and being able to more easily differentiate the troops types enhances an already fun scenario.
