Army, getting started
I am new to wargaming but extremly interested in the new FOG Renaissance ruleset. I have read the FOG rulebook and now I am planning to buy the FOG Renaissance ruleset, but I want to get started with buying and painting an army before the releasedate.
I dont own an army yet, so I am curious of the estimated amount of figures needed to be able to build, say an 800p TYW protestant/swedish army, and if possible the amount of figures needed of the different unit types, pike, shot, dragoons, cavalry etc.

Welcome to the hobby & period.
before you start buying, you need to work out what scale - 15mm or 28/30mm are the two main ones for this period. Finding out what local opponents play is the best idea. Depending upon your location in the world that may have a factor as well. I believe many comps in the UK/US use 15mm but some people do play with 28's. Find some local players and what they use is my recommendation - if you can.
Then rather than aiming for a full list, I would suggest starting to painting up pike & shot foot and general pistol armed troops. I believe there is a thread in this board which shows an example English Civil War army. That's not what you explicitly want, but it will be somewhat close - I suspect.
The rules will be out in a couple of months, so that will likely get you started till the official lists are available. Hope this helps.

For later TYW armies yes, for early TYW armies less so.tobpal02 wrote:Thanks gentlemen. This has been unvaluable help. I think I will go for 15mm as my friends are, for the moment, using that scale in this period. Do you think ECW figures will pass as TYW? The range of ECW figures seems larger than TYW...
In 28mm I have made up 28 x 16 Pike/16 shot units. They are pretty generic and Royalist, Parliamentarian, Danish, Swedish and Imperialist flags abound! At home for a large battle be it ECW or TYW they all come out. They are all based on 40 x 40 stands (4 Figs per stand) I have a few surplus shot than can bolster unbits if reuired, or I can simply not deploy a whole unit, if say, they are early Royalist with less shot than Pike etc.
If I was to put on a demo game then I would be a little more careful, about who was banded with who etc, allthough I do have a couple of spare cadre bases which give extra flexibility, together with a few spare flags.

I beleive that pikemen will be 4 men to a 15mmx40mm base with the front row at level for their pikes and the back row will have pikemen standig with raised pikes and shotte will be 3 men to a 20mmx40mm base(for 15mm scale of course)or 2 men for skirmish/forlorn hope stands of the same size but I could be wrong.I am also stocking up on my armies since I will be building several opposing armies as well in 15mm.
