This is so. And for more realism in the game, this is one of the things that should be changed for what matters is the hex you target and not the hex from which you take-off. I´m talking of things like low visibility and rain/snow that they affect much more to an attacking air unit than a defending land unit one. So the mud/winter penalty should be applied on the attacking hex and not in the hex from which the air unit has its air base.

    Hi Plaid

I am very impressed with your situation in Leningrad and the atlantic....But you are in serious trouble on the russian front, much needed troops are elsewhere. You need to reinforce bigtime, if not Max is gonna run you over like tanks on grass. This winter will be tough...

I think invasion of italy is not iminent, max needs heavier presence in the air, more fighters and definetely bombers. No serious invasion without tacs. The troops he has been landing now is just to piss you off and make you commit much needed troops from the eastern front.

The big hammer is coming from east. In order to prevent a total defeat, i would produce a lot of ground units. put leaders along the front, always behind enemy lines so they don´t get hurt. Rail as much units over to the russian front as possible, gar, inf, from germany and france. It´s highly unlikely that max can launch any operations across the channel so you can reinforce that part later in the game. You need a two row line defense in russia to withstand the pressure. The one line you have is full of gaps here and there.

Things are looking dark....to be honest i have to say allied total victory in 43....anything else than that, you put up one hell of a fight.

Hah! Tell that to Harry Truman.

Keep fighting, Plaid. Reports of your demise are truly premature!

    Axis turn 42

    Post by Plaid »

First axis turn of severe winter here, so I can see some results.
Max attacked all units, I considered exposed in previous post, but only corps near Rostov was destroyed.
In other sectors my troops fought well even with effectiveness loss.
I still can see only 1 tank corps and 1 mech corps, rest of the attackers are common INF. Soviet air support is very limited aswell (Max even uses 6 steps bomber) and looks like this attacks are costly for them.
    1
    Image
AGN positions were not attacked by anyone but partisans. This soviet force looks more like reconing patrol, I don't think that they are going to challenge my frontline with 2 ent and already partly recovered effectiveness.
    2
    Image
In AGC sector soviet effort was concentrated near Orel. My casualties were also limited (while you can see 2 step soviet infantry, that was beated in unlucky attack, against my mechs I guess). I will try to defend this position aswell.
    3.
    Image
AGS built up new defensive line, including fresh railed from the Germany troops without effectiveness loss, and supposed to stand against all soviet attacks now.
    4
    Image
im MED allies are now very passive, so I have to plan some offencive action against them.
This turn I purchased 3 more german corps units.
P.S. I have never seen axis surrender in 1943 in any of my games, and this one dont look special in this way, in fact I did in USSR better, then often.
I don't care about gaps in my lines because Max has even more of them.

I think your Russian campaign is doing well - I think Supermax is the perfect soviet opponent - he may try force the issue in the east too early and you can then punish him. He doesn't like to sit and wait (as you should with the ruskies).

I didn't agree with your med tactics but then that's personal opinion. I think your Russian position is a good one - hopefully Supermax continuos to attack which will allow you to destroy more units.

This is a very interesting AAR. Thanks for the time put into this.

    Axis turn 43

    Post by Plaid »

Suddenly soviet offensive stopped itself, I got message from Supermax.
Russian offensive postponed, nothing mroe to achieve on the theatre of war...
    Image
I decided not to pursue soviet forces, because of bad weather and because probably its a trap.
So my troops stay at their position without any action. I doubht, if USSR now can collect more PPs, then Germany (i have 150), when I sunk both spawned convoys (86 and 42, i guess) and conquered so much of soviet territory. Even if we have ~even PP income, I produce far more tech advanced troops.
    Image
In the MED again no action, while my airforce finally deployed (and gain effectiveness from my HQ). I am not sure, is it worthy to smoke out this britts from the mountains - casualties in plains and infantry supposed to be unreasonably high.
This turn italians got subs level 3 tech. I built 3rd general lab for them (7 total now) and spent rest PPs on SUB upgrades. Next turn 4th sub will be ready.
German PPs were spent to purchase 3 mechanised units for future offensive needs.
P.S. At the end of my turn I got Italian partisan near Messina. Only 1 step and probably will be destroyed soon, but he spotted british 10 step armour in Palermo, 10 step mech with HQ in Messina and 6 step strategic bomber near Messina. Thats all allied forces on Sicily.

It is really good that max is retreating, give you some room, think it´s wise of you not to pursuit him. It seems that max i biding his time in russia to catch up a little in technology and troops. i still think you have a very tough job ahead though.

Like you suggested and offensive in italy looks fine, throw them britts of the mainland.

    Axis turn 44

    Post by Plaid »

1942 started, providing me with number of free axis minor inf and garrisons (2 and 2 in fact).
Totally nothing happens on the East, I even don't see single soviet unit, but partisans.
In Italy looks like Supermax used his fighter to attack partisan, and it was intercepted with my fighter (same tech, better organisation and experience), and I got disasterous 5 : 2 result. So this turn I had to repair this fighter, while I attacked 2nd british fighter with my 2nd, getting 2 : 1 in my favour.
Offensive probably will not happen because it's nothing to achieve - even if I destroy this corps units, they can easily land again.
    Image
This time in the Atlantic another poorly escorted fighter - this time american - was spotted by u-boats.
    Image
I spent my PPs on repairs and another german fighter unit. Strategic bombing of germany may start now, with USA entry, and I need to counter this bombers.

    Some stats for 1941 campaign.
    German research:
    Image
    Italian research
    Image
    Casualties
    Image
German infantry casualties are very low, if we keep in mind, that up to 1/4 of this casualties are axis minor.
I think, that things are going right way for now. Barbarossa were slightly more succesful, than I expected (Leningrad, Petrozavodsk and Kursk/Orel were not primary objectives), partly because Max's strange offensive in Finland.
In Italy nothing happens for months and even if Supermax will chose Italy as his main offence direction, I now have enough reserves to stop allies there, thanks to rugged Italian terrain and returned troops from the ostfront. Also italian submarines are built and ready.

With respect to the allies in the Med, my suggestion is to ignore his INF and concentrate your TACs on his ships and the ARM unit (ie high value PP targets) so that you get an adequate return for the oil expended. If his FTRs and CVs are not using sentry mode, see if you can draw them up and ground strike them with a second FTR. With a tech advantage, you should be able to get a favourable loss rate and minimise his PP accumulation.

I don't have tech advantage over RAF fighters ( i have it only few turns when I just discover new level), but I have up to 15-20 more effectiveness.
Anyway, idea to spot and bomb armour is good, its in city and will have some penalties.

And again we have no action but anti-partisan operations in Russia.
But its already time to plan future '42 campaign there and deploy reserves.
This time in MED i redeployed my airforce to stop Supermax's tank, and now I am ready to strike it with 2 bombers to inflict significant PP casualties of even destroy it (Max can't repair more than 3 steps).
    Image
In Atlantic american convoy was tracked down and attacked, damaging fighter transport. I am going to completely destroy in next turn.
    Image
This turn I purchased one more german fightrer and one infantry corps.

Yes. Not to escort properly a transported air unit is an expensive mistake...

He can still escape, i see 2 ships close around, if he corners down he only need one more to completely soround the fighter. After that he can bring in support and sailaway.

What is you plans for the summer offensive in russia, targets?

I am back now, and ready to post some fresh turns into this AAR.
First, Max hide his transport inside box of USN ships, so he lost only 48 PPs instead of 100.
Also he attacked my uboat with his DD.
      Image
By the way Italian sub patrolling near gibraltar pass was sweeped by british DD aswell (3 : 2 in allied favour), so I sent it back for repairs, while deployed fresh one for patrol duties.
But back to the Atlantic. I decided to sink this RN destroyers, becuase they had some steps damage and poor organistaion (was long time at sea, without resting at base, I guess). My upgraded Uboats did their job well, only 1 step was lost, while sinking RN ship.
      Image
Another wolfpack intercepted soviet convoy (and almost destroyed it), but I think, that now attack of USAAF strategic bomber will follow (or will not, if Supermax didn't deploy his bombers for ASW duties)
      Image
Inspired by this kriegsmarine achievments (aswell as by having this great PP income and no action to pay for various repairs and reinforcements) I ordered to build 2 new Uboat flotilias, which will help me to dominate Atlantic or probably force RN elements to rebase from MED.
      Image
In Italy airstrike delayed again. Reasons are - both my fighters were at 9 steps (in dog fight combat it means 1 less attack dice to roll, so pure advantage for allies), low effectivenes after all this rebasements and fighting (I have ~75 while I can have up to 85+) and new dog fight tech level next turn.
      Image
I already started to redeploy luftwaffe back to the east (1 bomber this turn was taken from Italy). Italians spent their PPs on 3rd naval lab, which will allow them to get max level submarines tech pretty fast.
And here is a picture of France, where my naval and air forces are prepairing to intercept allied convoys aswell (well, I need better weather to actually spot this convoys with my strategic bombers, or maybe I should risk and send destroyer division into recon patrol)
      Image
This turn my Scholven oil facility was bombed with RAF TAC and SAC units, so I railed 2 fighters from Russia (by the way 2 last german ones, I have 2 in Italy and this 2, need to build much more). Probably I shall place some useless air unit (Italian fighter for example) atop this synth oil factory to prefent allies from bombing it 2 times per turn (if there is air unit on the hex, you can attack this hex with air unit only once), but not now - there are no escorts and I want both allied planes to get their portion of damage.
As you can see above, general Guderian will recover soon, to lead one of my main AGs in russia (center or south), so its former commander will be relocated to Berlin to rise effectiveness of fighter wings and fresh built units. And I probably need another commander for french west coast, to coordinate this air-naval group.

My turn started with good research progress.
      Image
I immediately upgraded all my tanks on the east (from level 5 to level 10), armour performance now supposed to be much better.
      Image
Also I upgraded some planes and ships with my fresh techs. One on fighters, deployed near Berlin, was railed to western France, to escort my strategic bomber luftflotte. Weather was clear this turn in the central Europe zone, so next turn I will start my raiding probably.
Russian convoy was finished off near its origin location (no USAAF bombers were seen), while my subs spotted british one.
      Image
I decided to place my sub into ambush and destroy it next turn, but, sadly, it choosen another course and escaped. I will catch it next turn, if USN escorts will not come.
Because of fair weather in the black sea, I sent my romanian DD to reconing raid for Rostov. Elements of soviet frontline spotted.
      Image
Precise plans for eastern campaign are not ready yet, while I plan to strike with my AGC straight for Moscow, while southern army group will be ordered to break soviet frontline and secure Maikop oilfields (maybe even further to caucassian region), supported by amphibious assault.
I spent my PPs this turn for upgrades and general Kleist's recruitment, who will be in charge in France.

I have to say, that MED winter luftwaffe operation was finally ruined.

      Image

Max rebased his fighters, so all my airforce now is in his sight (he can attack bombers or force one intercept of my fighter, and then attack this same fighter 2nd time, causing high casualties).
I redeployed fighters and railed bombers back to Russia, because fair weather will soon arrive there. I am planning to build additional bomber and deploy it in Italy permamently for support purposes, but now this luftflottes are needed in Russia much more.

      Image

Von Kleist arrived into his HQ in France, where my planes spotted some unescorted RAF bombers (probably they wanted to attack my surface ships divisions in sea), TAC air was immediately striked with fighter. Results could be better, but it had only 68 effectiveness because of all this railings.

      Image

In atlantic I finally tracked down this convoy, which ran away from my ambush previous turn. Now it going to be destroyed - 51 more PPs will never reach British stockpile.
      Image

In Russia recovered Guderian arrived to lead AGC , while former commander, von Rundstedt and his garrison arrived to Berlin, to command reserve army (rise effectiveness of fresh built units, for example) and to coordinate luftwaffe airforce, protecting Reich.
      Image

This turn I got level 5 subs, meaning that soon I will have ultimate 6th level - very good in '42 (thats reason, why I often build 2 naval labs rather then 1 - once I got subs level 6 I will switch one - or I will wait until max lab limit will rise to 4, because 3rd general one is not necessary)
Italians also got their 9th lab (inf) having now 3 in navy, inf and general. I don't think that they need any more for now - its tool late and costly to go for planes or tanks. By the way now I have ready for action command of good italian units (mech with leader, tank, infantry and 2 air units), which don't have any orders. I could sent them to hunt partisans, if I had any country, spamming lots of them (greece, spain, yugoslavia), but I don't. Maybe they will return to eastern front.

German PPs this turn were spent on two more panzer korps. I have 5 now, (and 1 italian), and deffinetely can afford more with this large oil stock and good PP income.
