As for play style: I realize some players dont like HOW their opponents play.. This is of course , as mention by other posters, is a very very subjective thing.... I think from the forums some players dont like when their opponent sits and tries to play a defensive battle.. I have no problem with this at all, after all both players have the same chance of getting terrian that advantagious , and if your opponent gets that and chooses to use it , why is that an issue? If people can start commenting with such subjective opinions then i really feel it will just breed bad blood etc...

Fortunately FOF is a very tight game and there are no bugs, or game mechanic flaws that can be exploited.
Gray Mouser (GM) is spot on - Is it an issue?

I have been playing since November and had one person resign on me twice without asking first - Like GM's approach; I do not pick up any of their challenges now. Everyone else has shown themselves as parfait knights including the two who asked permission to resign first. To all of you now a considerable number my thanks for the games.

My twopenn'orth.

Lets police ourselves and accept it is rude to resign without asking/agreeing first.
As for rating each other - Lets not have subjective rankings broadcast to all and sundry.

To Ian I would say invest the time in making your excellent product better in other ways- As GM has already, eruditely explained 'Gamesman ratings' are more open to abuse than dealing with those who resign rudely.

My only suggestion would be  :-

If a rating is required just make it a ranked table on multiplayer games won/drawn/lost as is done now on the games against AI.
It is probably relatively simple to add a toggle/flag allowing any multi-player game to be excluded from ranking at the point the challenge is issued.

Result a simple objective ranking on multiplayer games played and chosen to be included, but where any challenge issuer could post an opted out game. (For the experimenters to experiment etc. etc.)

+1. No need for rankings/gamesmanships scores. Only been playing a month, but not had anyone resign on me either. Rankings/gamesmanships scores have the potential of causing more issues than solving them. I would be put off if I somehow earned a score of less of 100% or whatever for reasons beyond my control.

Different tack, but what I would like is a score of MP games as suggested before, on the played games screen. Need to think long and hard whether that score is for public consumption.

not really, but it happens and can be annoying
today my opponent resigned a game of the battle of Crecy on turn 3 saying that the map wasn't his cup of tea and that he (the english) could do nothing.
well, i think the battle of crecy isn't that obscure little battle unknown to most...

My initial view was that resigning was a perfectly reasonable thing to do when losing badly - I felt that it was the same as conceding defeat gracefully.

However, it is clearly not perceived as "graceful" by the majority of players, and I must admit that I have found it frustrating when my opponent has resigned without any explanation when he is either not losing, or is only marginally losing.

It might be worth taking a leaf out of World of Warcraft's book - this tends to have little tips in the loading screening, some of which talk about sportsmanlike play.

Perhaps the resign button could open a dialogue box requiring the resigning player to state his reason for resigning.

I have only been resigned on twice, both times by the same opponent and only after 2 or 3 turns, without explanation.
I don't see it as an issue in general, but those two times were annoying nonetheless.
After the second time, I decided not to answer any of his challenges anymore.
So far he didn't accept any of mine, and I hope he won't in the future.

As a lot of people have said it's (mostly) the same opponent who does this, I'm wondering if we're all talking about the same Roman-Germanic warlord from late antiquity. ;-)

I received a resignation yesterday, the first time in many months. It was obvious why, the battle was very one-sided and my opponent was all but defeated. He did have the good grace to explain and offered me a re-match.

I guess it's a personal preference thing. Some will hate a resignation whatever circumstance, others (including me) will only hate it if it is neither rationale nor explained, some will probably not mind whatever.

I do like the suggestion about a prompt or tip of the day, where a message about good sportsmanship, as well as useful shortcuts, tactics, etc. could be displayed, on the loading screen. I also like the suggestion about a dialogue box or prompt to explain the resignation - although there is the chat box that will follow... so maybe a prompt is all that is required.
