Good going! But maybe instead of buying even more fighters you need more armour/mech, to properly exploit the holes soon to appear in German lines. With his lines on the breaking point I dont think the Axis will pour more PPs into the Luftwaffe.

Good point. Right now my PPs income is very healthy (approx. 237 and growing). Last turn I had 40-50 spare PPs after my repairs, so what should I do with it all? Frankly the war will end soon, and I am contemplating breaking my "do not go below 75% manpower" rule. I wonder if I should invest in tanks 2 (per turn) or mechs (3-4 per turn). I need something with speed and punch and I have enough infantry as it. And as you point out there is no point in anymore air units as I dominate the skies completely.

I agree with Trulster...it is time to build as many ground units as possible to exploit any weakness/holes appearing in the Axis lines. I would also hazard a landing in Italy: as one of the other posters said, it could have come off as you only ran into two subs and had a movement rate advantage. Those units in North Africa have done there job their job. Seeing how Cyprus fell so easily, it might be useful to move the fighter to the port in Crete to recon and also attack any subs that appear (if this is possible without Greece being in the war that is). It is getting late in the game and the Med is a perfect theatre to take some risks. Unfortunately, the landing on the Romanian/Bulgarian coast was foiled...too bad he moved the Luftwaffe fighter down there for recon purposes.

23. December 1944, AG Center continues its retreat
Severe winter hits Russia.
Image

The severe winter effect on the axis units still inside Russia is minute.
Image

The Russian scientists produce more results.
Image

All quiet in North Africa.
Image

AG Center continues its retreat into Poland. Several axis minor units are left behind as speed bumps. In the central sector 4 axis minor units perish and Brest-Litovsk is liberated.
Image

AG South manages to kill two of my infantry armies. The Red Air Force goes into action and disrupts the axis units which will perish this turn. 3 axis minor units are destroyed. I almost manage to destroy the panzer grenadier north of Odessa, but thanks to fumbling with my mouse (being a bit too eager to press the mouse button) I miss my last attack and it survives.
Ploiesti is bombed.
Image

After unit repairs I have 238PPs to spare. I buy 4 MECHs and dip below the 75% manpower pool level.

12. January 1945, Konigsberg is captured, the Wehrmacht flees from the Russian front
The weather.
Image

The Russian scientists still manage to produce some results.
Image

All quiet in North Africa. I am gathering units to the ports so that I can try a final assault against Italy.
Image

AG Center still continues to retreat. It has left strong forces for the defence of Konigsberg. The Red Air Force rains death and destruction in East Prussia and an infantry korps and a panzer korps are destroyed when Konigsberg is captured. A Wehrmacht garrison is destroyed east of Warsaw as the Red Army advances into Poland.
Image

For AG South the situation must have become critical. The front is hardly continuous. After heavy Red Army attacks more units are destroyed. The panzer grenadiers of Lvov defend the city courageously. North of Odessa the Red Army manages to breach Dniester. A much damaged panzer grenadier is killed of by Red fighters. An added bonus is that the fighter in Ploiesti is destroyed by Red fighters as it defends Bucharest from strategic bombing.
Image

The situation has certainly changed in the East! Supermax is pulling back his panzers for the spring defence of the Reich. It seems that the infantry will be sacrificed for the survival of the panzerwaffe. My goal is to reach the Ostwall before the end of the war. Next turn all southern aircraft will be sent to the central sector and help with the drive through Poland and into Germany.

After unit repairs I have 238PPs to spare. I buy 4 MECHs and dip below the 75% manpower pool level.
Image

The partisans in the west have become more active. In the US a partisan unit manages to capture a port and the unit in the port will be destroyed!
Image

In France the French partisans have become quite brave and captured a city in southern France.

If you can get your partisan to Washington then you will deny Supermax an Ultimate victory.

1. February 1945, The Red Army pushes forward
The weather.
Image

The Russian scientists improve the TAC bomber.
Image

The Red Army will set sail next turn for Italy.
Image

The Red Army attacks Warsaw but the defenders manage to survive. The Luftwaffe appears again and several Red fighters assault the remnants of the Luftwaffe. The Red Army is advancing slowly as most of them are in the Russian weather zone with severe weather. Next turn there should be room for some manoeuvre as several of my units have entered the European weather zone which only has winter weather.
Image

AG South loses control of Lvov and the Red Army destroys four infantry units. Because of lack of air support the Red infantry is suffering heavy casualties.
Image

I deploy 4 new MECHS and buy 5 new MECHs.
Image

The US partisan is making its way towards New York.

21. February 1945, Warsaw is liberated
The weather.
Image

The Red Army sails towards Italy. One of the transports runs into a sub. With 6 transports I should be able to accomplish something. Time will tell.
Image

The weather is clear for Europe. The Red Army surges forward with LOTS if air attacks Supermax lose 5 units in Poland. Warsaw is liberated and Danzig is under heavy attacks. I spot the most of the panzers having manned the Ostwall. They have only entrenchment level 1-2 so it should be easy to breach it. I have a left a tank army a bit exposed in the middle of Poland. If Supermax wants to finish it off he will either have to abandon some units from the Ostwall or river defence.

In the south the Red Army advances slowly because of rough terrain and most units are still in the Russian wather zone with limited movement. Odessa is under attack and will be liberated next turn.

Again the censorship from the Russian front is strict (again meaning I forgot to take the screenshots).

4 new MECHs are deployed.

The US partisan has been stopped by a Wehrmacht garrison.

I wonder if Max realises that his ARMour get a 40% penalty being stationed in fortresses and 35% penalties in cities, they are not the ideal defensive troops.

13. March 1945, Warsaw is liberated
The weather.
Image

The Russian scientists still make progress.
Image

In the Mediterranean the Red Army transports close in on Italy.
Image

The Red Army continues to advance in force through Poland. Danzig will be captured next turn. A tank army makes contact with the Ostwall.
Image

In the south the Russians struggle to cross the Carpathians.
Image

5 new MECHs are deployed.

2. April 1945, Warsaw is liberated
The weather.
Image

The Russian scientists make some final discoveries before the war ends.
Image

The Red Army manages to land in Albania and Sardinia. Both areas have been abandoned by the Italians. Italian subs attacks a troop transport and the Italian cities have been manned with defenders. My transports travel back to North Africa. I suppose this is the last major action in this theatre.
Image

In Poland the Wehrmacht attempts a weak counter attack and hardly make a dent in my glorious army. The Red Air Force decimates the Germans before they are destroyed by infantry attacks. Next turn I will try to breach the Ostwall. This will be my goal before the war ends.
Image

In the south the Red Army advances into Hungary and Romania. The goal is to knock both countries out of the war.

22. April 1945, The Red Army assaults the Ostwall, Bucharest is captured
The weather.
Image

A lone Red Army transport had sailed towards Gibraltar. The action fails as Gibraltar is garrisoned and an Italian sub hunts after the transport.
Image

All quiet in the Mediterranean.
Image

The Red Army assaults the Ostwall head on with air and ground attacks. All attacks fail and the Wehrmacht is still defending along the Oder.
Image

In the south Bucharest is captured and Romania is out of the war. The assault on Budapest has started with heavy Russian casualties as they have no air support.

12. May 1945, The end
The weather.
Image

The Red Army desperately tries to breach the Ostwall but fail in numerous attacks.
Image

In the south Budapest is captured and Hungary is out of the war.
Image

The Red Army controls most of the Balkans and are ready to advance into Bulgaria.
Image

What are the victory conditions?
Image

Again, not your everyday result :)

I end my turn and Supermax gets an Axis Ultimate Victory. Well done to Max. He thoroughly defeated me.

The war is over and today it is May 8th and VE Day. A nice coincidence end to this game! Thanks to Supermax for a very enjoyable game. I also want to thank everybody for their comments and tips during this AAR. Hope you have enjoyed reading about the desperate and at times futile struggle of the Allies :)

Finally BIG thanks to the team that made Grand Strategy. Guys your work is simply awesome!

The final stats will come in a day or two.

Great game! And well done to both of you. Even though you had a Ultimate defeat you hung in there and kept it entertaining to the very end. The axis and the Soviets rule the world. Yikes!

Thanks for an entertaining and interesting AAR!

Congrats on getting back into the game after the crushing defeat of the USA. Although I greatly admire Supermax's audacity and skill, it is clearly also an issue of game design - that the rest of the USA are not part of the game made the Axis victory possible in that theatre.

Finally, respect to you for continuing the fight through the Allies' darkest hours - almost like a Russian Churchill :-)

Summary of the war (May 1945)
The last summary of this war.

This last year the Russians have been on the offensive. Advancing and killing axis units. The 1944 summer counter offensive by Supermax was devastating. The Red Army lost a lot of its offensive capabilities. I still managed to continue to advance and attack, but this slowed me down. I still recon that I would not have reached Berlin if his counter offensive had not occurred. My repeated attacks against the Ostwall were all repelled. To be honest I was surprised how tough it was to attack it. The units did not have that much entrenchment and their quality was lower than my Russian army. Well another lesson learned :)

Total casualties.

Russian production reaching an all time high.

Manpower status:
Russia 1472 75%

It was really hard not to speak up when you were advancing into that counteroffensive. Actually, it was hard not to speak up several times in the game, but especially towards the end when you had a real shot at getting to Berlin. I do reckon that you might have pierced the Ostwall had he not meticulously planned that counteroffensive. If those same armor and air units had been left at the front and repaired as losses dictated, you would have swept them up in the general slaughter, and their replacements would have been roadkill quality.

Well played, overall. You really were headed for a total loss early on in this game, and you recovered nicely.

It was fun watching you progress from a hapless newbie to a near master player over the course of this game. I feel sorry for the next Axis player who encounters you.
