another unusual case

Post by Rekila »

The situation: A unit of Swiss pike is charged on the front by a Spanish unit of sword and buckler men and in the rear by a Spanish MF unit of arquebus. The Swiss survive the first turn and them the MF Spanish unit is charged in the rear but another Swiss unit. So now we have a column of four units fighting perpendicular to the long sides of the table. A Spanish S&B, Swiss pike, MF Spanish arquebus and Swiss pike. Next turn the two units in the middle (first Swiss pike and the Spanish arquebus) broke at the same time. How do they rout? We decided that both turn 90º and that the Spanish rout to the left and the Swiss to the right (more friends there). And the other two units (Spanish S&B and the second Swiss pike) How do they pursed? If they have to wheel they lost contact with the routers and end touching each other. We make it this way but were unsure of the whole thing.

If I have it correctly the swiss are fighting to there front and rear if that is correct as there are enemy troops in front and behind they die were they are they can't rout IIRC. The arquebus break away from thir attackers 180 turn move away, now if they meet up with the swiss pike they can IIRC move up to a base sideways(maybe this is only for friends not got the rules with me?) I'm sure someone with the rules will give you the correct rundown

The person whose bound it is decides who routs first. If the Pike rout first then they can't go anywhere - there are enemy behind and they can't turn 90 degrees as the enemy are in the way, so they remain in place and are removed at the end of the melee phase because they are unable to complete their rout move (i.e. once all units are routed). If the Spanish MF Arqubusier are two ranks deep they can turn 90 degrees as they have room to turn and then move either to the left or right, although they are very likely to be caught.

If the Spanish MF move first then they will move out the way as explained above and the Swiss Pike will then carry out their rout move, likely to involve bursting through their other unit of Swiss pikemen, swiftly followed by the Sword and buckler men.

Both units (the 1st pike unit and the Spanish MF) are fighting to the front and rear. Both are 4 deep (2x4) at the beginning of the fight ( the Swiss have 5 bases when they rout the Spanish 7) So if I understand correctly as it is now the Spanish turn. The Spanish player decides who routs first. If he select the Swiss: Then that unit is destroyed and the Spanish Mf can them rout trough the space towards the Spanish S&B?

No - the unit is taken off at the end of the phase, not the end of the rout move.

However, because the MF are on 40x20 bases they can always turn 90 degrees, but the Pikes can't because they are on 40x15 bases.

I.e. if the MF are 4x2 then you are 80mm deep and 80mm wide. When you turn 90 degrees you are still 80x80mm. The Pikes are 80mm wide and 60mm deep, so when they attempt to turn 90 degrees, the additional 20mm means they can't turn.
