Ghaznavid 1000pt

Post by MarkE »

I'm putting together some 1000 point army ideas for a themed doubles tournament at my club that covers 'Dark Ages' 500 - 1000 AD armies, and have thought Ghaznavids could be fun to run. I've come up with 2 lists so far that might work, but would appreciate any input that people might have.

Ghaznavid List 1 – 999 points

1 IC
3 TC

4 Ghilman Cv Arm Sup Dr Bow Sword
4 Ghilman Cv Arm Sup Dr Bow Sword
4 Ghilman Cv Arm Sup Dr Bow Sword
4 Ghilman Cv Arm Sup Dr Bow Sword
4 Nomad Horse Archers LH Av UnDr Bow Sword
4 Nomad Horse Archers LH Av UnDr Bow Sword
4 Nomad Horse Archers LH Av UnDr Bow Sword
4 Arab Cavalry LH Av UnDr Lancer Sword
8 Dailami MF Arm Sup Dr Impact Foot Sword
6 Ghazi Foot MF Prot Sup UnDr Impact Foot Sword
8 Spearmen HF Arm Av UnDr Defensive Spear
4 Supporting Archers LF Av UnPr UnDr Bow
4 Naffatun LF UnPr UnDr Firearm
2 Elephants
2 Elephants

14 BGs

Ghaznavid List 2 – 995 points

1 IC
3 TC

4 Ghilman Cv Arm Sup Dr Bow Sword
4 Ghilman Cv Arm Sup Dr Bow Sword
4 Ghilman Cv Arm Sup Dr Bow Sword
4 Nomad Horse Archers LH Av UnDr Bow Sword
4 Nomad Horse Archers LH Av UnDr Bow Sword
4 Nomad Horse Archers LH Av UnDr Bow Sword
4 Arab Cavalry Cav Sup Arm UnDr Lancer Sword
8 Dailami MF Arm Sup Dr Impact Foot Sword
6 Ghazi Foot MF Prot Sup UnDr Impact Foot Sword
8 Sep Deployed Archers LF Poor UnPr UnDr Bow
4 Naffatun LF UnPr UnDr Firearm
2 Elephants
2 Elephants
2 Elephants
2 Elephants

15 BGs

Wall of elephants in List 2 seems like it might be fun, although potentially fragile, although had thought 2 groups of 4 might be OK and hopefully avoid overlaps. Was going to take dismounts for Ghilman depending on terrain. Is 8 elephants too many?? :D

Will need to get some new figs to go with Legio Heroica Arabs I already have to make the army more Ghaznavid than Arab. Was looking at Khurasan's Dailami, Ghazi Swordsmen and Elephants. I assume these will mix OK (as they will be dicrete BGS anyway) with the Legio Heroica Cav & LH BGs.

Cheers, Mark.

2 groups of 4 elephants would be very effective. Unfortunately they only come in 2s for that reason :D

The Ghazi foot might be a bit of a liability I feel. Undrilled, small and a bit vulnerable. Plus you'd end up having to use them as otherwise the Dailami will be swamped in terrain.

These seem a bit small for 1000 point armies. Are there any cheap BGs available to bulk it up a bit?

Take the Max LH and Max out on Armoured Bow/Sword Cavalry leave foot at home if you can otherwise take some poor LF if you can take an IC win the terrain take the least terrain you can skirmish one flank and centre and hit one flank with Cav/Bow. Just a thought?

There's unusual Dave :D But you could take a better army than Ghaznavid for your plans.

putting the arg into argumentative, except for the lists I check where there is no argument!

Legio Heroica are a beautiful figure I use them for my Later Crusaders but they are a big figure so they many look a bit funny next to some other makes. Though if the figures are in separate BGs and from a distance they will look OK.

It was better to leave disputing about the faith to the theologians and just run argumentative non-believers through with the sword (Louis IX).

True but I'm going for FOG world domination with LH/Cav armies? :)

Thanks for the responses.

I must not have been clear about the elephants, when I said in 4s, I meant 2 BGs of 2 bases side-by-side, to try to avoid overlaps, so 4 bases together, but as part of 2 BGs. :?

Also take the point about the Ghazi MF. I could happily drop them from List 2 (as I don't have the figures anyway) and take 4 more Arab LH Lancer Sword and a fortified camp;

or drop the Ghazi and 1 BG of elephants (making 6 elephants in total) from List 2 and take the extra 4 Arab LH and 4 more Ghilman Cav Bow Sw and get to 999 points. I'm already maxxed out on LF in that list, so that might be a better plan.

Part of my point of wanting to take Ghaznavid's to a fairly friendly Doubles tournament though is to turn up with a wall of elephants just for fun. :P Otherwise I might as well take any of the pre 1000AD Arab armies sans elephants.

I still like the idea of the Dailami, as Armoured Superior MF seems to be useful. Point also taken about terrain, that's one reason to take an IC, that way I can chose Steppe if facing a big foot army, as I assume some people will bring armies like Vikings etc to a 'Dark Ages' comp, and then we can race around shooting at them and try and whack into their flanks with the Lancer Swords.

Legio heroica are a bit bigger than Khurasan, but I have a few mixed bases. Just stick the Khurasan figs on a couple of pieces of card cut from a cereal packet. Works for me.

Interesting ideas. Someone at my club has this army and likes big battles - maybe I can get him to try FoG using it.

That is a nice idea of putting a wedge under the figure base raise it so the heights differences are not so obvious.
