Allied bombing strategy

Post by ahuyton »

I wonder what people think about using a large force of bombers? In one game, against Craig who probably has worked this out, I have about 6 bomber units and am using against German rail caps, the oil site and the ruhr. I have also researched air quite a lot to make sure of getting higher quality bombers. It's not clear to me if the effect on the Axis proportionate to the costs. I could, after all, have bought about 7 armour units for the same price.

It is quite fun though to see the various German cities go yellow, orange and red. This is not the best criterion though.

I think the answer depends on how effective your opponent is in attacking convoys and troop transports with subs. If so, I'd rather use strategic bombers for anti-sub duty. If limited sub activity, bombs away on oil producing cities first, rail cap and high PP targets second. Being fairly new to this game, take this advice for what it's worth

I like to be heavy with strats. In one of my current games I have about 9 yank ones and a brit. And the Russian one.

I am using them against strategic targets. And it has to be hurting as my opponent is not repairing all his units. And while he was updating his units, there have been no new German ones for sometime. Or none I can see haha.

He had a very week submarine campaign which now, in October 1944 has been neutralised. I have also almost completely destroyed his oil production facilities.

Given that winter must be due, the outcome depends on whether I can walk from west of Paris to Berlin before the end of the game. Should I get descent weather I am in with a chance. In the east, it will be a long footslog to Germany. And depend on what defences there are between Gomel and Berlin.

Strats, purchase and regular updates/repairs, are expensive. And you will never get a tactical return on them. But that is not their purpose. Used as I am doing so, is like inflicting on an opponent the death of a thousand cuts. As the Allied Player, I am constantly degrading his available resources. I can afford it; can he?
